DAMAGE BY FIRE.

VALUABLE STOCK SUFFERS

Extensive damage to costumes, furs and frocks was caused by a fire which broke out in The Vogue shop, Pacific Buildings, opposite the civic square site, at 7.30 last eveniug. Dense smoke issuing from under the verandah on the ground .floor attracted a large crowd, and when the city fire brigade arrived some difficulty was experienced in locating the seat of the outbreak. This was found to be at the rear of the premises, to No time was lost in suppressing the flames with the chemical apparatus and within hatf an hour the smoke had cleared, revealing the full extent of the damage. Most of the stock was spoiled by smoke and water, and Mr. M. Schneidemann, the ownQr, is stated to be a heavy loser. > The stock was insured for £ISOO in the Royal Exchange Office. A six-roomed residence at the subway end of Seddon Street, Pukekohe, owned by Mrs. Pilgrim, Khyber Pass, Auckland, and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. B. Thorburn and family, was destroyed by firs about 7 o'clock this morning. The kitchen stove had been used to prepara an early morning cup of tea, and later the kitchen was found to be on fire round the stove. The Pukekohe Fire Brigade was summoned but was to fight the fire owing to th« dwelling being too far beyond the water mains. However, some of Mr. Thorbum's furniture and effects were saved. The dwelling was a fairly old. one. Mr. Thorburn had a policy for £l5O in tha Royal Exchange Office on his furniture and effects.
