A BOY'S RESOURCE.

SAVES RAILWAY TRAIN.

LINE DAMAGED BY FLOOD. Through the bravery and prompt action of a boy, W. Hampton, a serious railway accident was probably averted a mile south of Ward's River, New South Wales, last week. From the opposite side of Johnston's Creek Hampton saw that the permanent way along an embankment had been washed away, and that several lengths of rails were suspended in the air. The boy promptly jumped into the flooded creek, swam across and ran along the middle of the track, waving his arms wildly and shouting. Ho brought the oncoming passenger train to a standstill. The driver had thought the lad demented, but on investigation he saw how narrow had been the escape from a catastrophe. The damage was caused by a cloudburst, which damaged the permanent way. Gullies and creeks soon became raging torrents, and water was more than 4ft. deep in many dwellings. An eyewitness stated that three thunderstorms converged over the locality, resulting in a tremendous downpour.
