"RUSSELL IN THE SIXTIES."

Sir, —"Lonehander's" interesting article in Thursday's Herald reminded me of a little anecdote that I hoard in Russell two years ago. One Sunday evening 1 attended the historic English church, and was shown by an attendant into an unoccupied pew.' At my feet was a square box, into which, naturally, I put my own feet. I wondered what the solitary box was for. When I returned to my boarding house I mentioned the fact to an "Old-Timer," and he informed that about 60 years baclc a prominent Maori chief was a regular worshipper. Then one winter he ceased co attend, giving as a reason (as he would not wear boots) that his feet got 'too cold. So the minister had a padded box placed in front of the old man's particular seat; and all was well. The padding had disappeared years ago. but the nailed-in box still remained. The said chief is buried in the churchyai'd. J.11.C.
