AUSTRALIAN ECONOMY.

THE FEDERAL TERRITORY.

RESULT OF REDUCED VOTE.

Owing to the reduction by one-third of 1 the amount proposed to be expanded in the Australian Federal Capital Territory during the current financial year, several important works will not be proceeded with. The Chief Commissioner, Sir John Butters. stated a few days ago that tho reduction of the £750,000 vote by £250,000 would meun'that during the present financial year nothing would be done toward the erection of the National War Memorial and Zoological Museum, and that the construction of subdivision roads would be eliminated from the programme. A substantial reduction in the number of workmen employed would be necessary, and immediately after the new' year the services of 200 men would be dispensed with. A number of officers on the staff of the commission would also be dismissed. The reduction of the vote is one action taken by the Federal Government to reduce expenditure from loan moneys and | to conform with the policy of the Australian Loan Council. Sir John Butters stated that he r was disappointed that the Government had not given him longer of its intention to curtail expenditure. The commission, he said, could then have "cut its suit, according to its cloth."
