THE TAURANGA REGATTA

POPULARITY OF FIXTURE.

ROWING AND SAILING RACES.

SUCCESSFUL AUCKLAND OARSMEN

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] T'ATTRA NG A, Wednesday.

The annual regatta was held to-day in dull, threatening weather. A north-east-erly wind worked np a choppy sea, which caused several mishaps in the earlier rowing events. The first five rowing races were rowed against the wind from the vicinity of the railway bridge to the Railway Wharf, opposite Monmouth Redoubt. It was then decided to chango the courso and the remaining four events were rowed over a more sheltered course, starting from between Matapihi and Maungatapn peninsulas, and finishing at the public baths.

There was a very large attendance. Many visitors made the trip from Auckland by the Matangi, and hundreds travelled by motor-car. The train from* Taneatua was well patronised. The regatta proved a great and was creditably managed by the committee and the secretary, Mr. C. T. Clinkard. Results wore:— Junior Pair Oars (open), li miles.— Tauranga (C. Hana and G. Lindell), 1; Waitemata, 2; Hamilton, 3. Also started: Auckland and St. George's. The sea was very choppy and the rowers had a stiff task against it.
