DEAD SEA WEALTH.
VARIED SALTS DEPOSITS. BRITAIN GRANTS CONCESSION. A and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON. Nov. 30. In the House of Commons to-day Mr. W. G. Ormsby-Gore, Under-Secretary for the Dominions, said four applications had been received for Dead Sea salts concession. It had been decided to grant the concession to two applicants, Messrs. Tullock and Novoineysky, based i>n a joint option. Negotiations were proceeding concerning the terms and conditions of the guarantees. There was ao> proposal by the Government to obtain a controlling interest by the purchase of shares. . Mr. Howard Bury, member "for South Wolverhampton: Is the Government aware that the potash deposits alone are worth £14,000,000,000, and that Germany so far has the monopoly of potash ? Will the Government consider the acquisition of a controlling interest, in view of its vital importance to the Empire ? Mr. Ormsby-Gore: I think the figures quoted are astronomical. Whatever the salts are worth, the processes of obtaining and marketing them are experimental and speculative. Ho did not think it would be advisable to ask the taxpayers to invest Tn such an enterprise.
