CABLES AND WIRELESS.

DISCUSSION IN BRITAIN. BEAM SYSTEM AND WAR. POLICY OF OTHER STATES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received December 1, 6.45 p.m.) - and N.Z. LONDON, Dec. 1. The competition between the cable and the beam wireless systems continues to be widely discussed' in the newpapers. In a lengthy review of the position the Daily Telegraph says it is the height ol folly for the Empire to encourage the beam system, to the detriment of the efficient maintenance of the cables. In spite of impressive results the beam is untrustworthy. As it passes over tracts of European and .Asiatic territory on its way to Australia, in time of war it would be most simple for a hostile Government to establish inexpensive beam stations and to jam the signals without interfering with its own signals, which would bo concentrated on another objective. The Telegraph points out that other countries are not neglecting the cables. For example, America has laid 13,000 miles of new cables in five years, and has another 10,000 miles in contemplation. Italy has 10,000 miles of new cables, and Germany has restored the cablo to New York from Emden, via the Azores.
