SHEFFIELD SHIELD CRICKET. QUEENSLAND STARTS WELL. A and N.Z. BRISBANE. Dec. I In the Sheffield Shield match at Bri* bano between Queensland and New Soutl Wales, the homo team finished its first innings for 419 (Rowe not out 128, Amos 23). Bowling for Now South Wales Everett took two wickets for 32 runs, Jordan two for 77, Morgan two for 44, Phillips two for 11. New South Wales opened sensationally, the first four wickets falling for 17 runs. Hornihrook and Hurwood took every advantage of the pitch and did great execu tion. Kippax and Watson stopped the rot for a time, and Oldfield made a good showing, but otherwise the visitors proved easy prey to tho bowlers.

Now South Wales lost seven wickets for 131 (Kippax 27, Watson 32, Oldfield 22, Everett not out 19). The visitors are in an unfortunate posi tion, as under the rules play must onrl after two hours on Thursday morning The weather was fins after heavy rain The actual pitch had been covered and was in good condition, but round the edges and the outfield were heavy and slow.
