THE MELBOURNE CARNIVAL. DOMINION PLAYERS FAREWELLED MATCHES AT PONSONBY GREEN. The Ponsonby Bowling Club yesterday afternoon entertained the New Zealand competitors who are leaving for Sydney by the Ulimaroa thi3 morning, to take part in the Australian bowling carnival in Melbourne. Fifteen of the 20 players were present, and 14 of them played matches against the centre executive, the requisite uumbers on each side being madp up by members of the Ponsonby Club and other visitors. As the president of the club, Mr. R A. Drummond, is one of the departing competitors, the good wishes of the Ponsonby bowlers were conveyed by the vice-presi-dont, Mr. J. Torrance, who was supported by Mr, J. Pascoe, president of the Auckland centre Mr. Pascoe extended a special welcome to Mr. S. M Stone, of Wellington, and vice-president of the Dominion Bowling Association, on his first visit to Auckland since his election to that position. Good wishes were also expressed by Messrs. J. W Hardley. T. C Schnackenberg and A Parsons The managers of the team, Messrs. Stone 'and Farrow, thanked the bowlers of Ponsonby. and of all Auckland, for their encouraging support. Mr. Stone stressed the fact that they were the pioneers of a movement which they hoped would lead to an annual interchange of competitive visits, as these were more important than winning the initial contest Mr. Drummond acknowledged the vote of thanks to the olub. but he was afraid the bowlers could not win every match in Australia, as was suggested by some of the speakers. Mr. V. Casey introduced Mr. Warron Ball, of the Petersham Club, Sydney, who, on behalf of the Australian bowlers, extended the hospitality of the Commonwealth. Other Australian bowlers present were Mr. J. Purves, ex-president of the Manly Club, and Mr. H. R. Burton, of the Strathfield Club.
