SWIMMING IN AUSTRALIA.

RETURN OF MISS MAGEE. Miss Doris Magee, the 100 yds. intermediate swimming champion and recordholder of New Zealand, arrived in Auck land by the Ulimaroa yesterday after spending some months in Sydney. Referring to the forthcoming contests m Sydney between Miss K. Miller, of Dunedin, and Miss Edna Davey, of Sydney; Miss. Magee said it was very difficult to prophesy who would win, although it was certain that the races would provide contests of exceptional interest. Miss Magee said there were some prom is ing girl sw'imniers in Sydney, and that the times credited to them were remarkable. Miss Jean Cocks, aged 12, who recently swam 150 yds. in lrn. 55 3-55., and Miss Betty Taw, aged 13, who had swum 100 yds. in 73s , had excellent prospects of developing into Olympic champions. Miss Davey had an excellent style, but swam very low in the water. She possessed great stamina and regularly trained over long distances. While in Sydney Miss Magee was made ;i member of the Telephone Girls' Club. S!ie expressed the opinion that the widespread encouragement of ladies' races was responsible for the present high stantidard of girl swimmers in Australia There were many who had attained remarkable efficiency. This was probably due to the fact that special attention was given to weekly test races, which were arranged specially for lady members of the various swimming chilis.
