LOSS TO THE CHURCH.
CANON F. W. YOUNG RETIRES. TRIBUTES TO HI. SERVICE. A large gathering of parishioners and friends met in All Saints' parish hall, Ponsonby, last evening to farewell Canon F. W. Young, for nine years vicar of the parish, and the Rev. E. Chitty. Ministers representing other churches in the district were present. Mr. E. Smith presided. Canon J. Haselden, who, in the absence of Archbishop Averill, represented • the diocese, expressed the esteem of the clergy for Canon Young. After many strenuous years in the ministry, during which he had been in charge of large and difficult parishes, it was fitting that Canon Young should seek lighter work, at the same time continuing to carry on God's ministry, even in his retirement. Not only had Canon Young fulfilled to the utmost all his duties in connection with All Saints', but he had taken the greatest interest in the diocese as a whole. lie had been on all the important standing committees and had devoted himself to the work of the Sunday schools m particular. Canon Haselden also paid a warm tribute to Mr. Chittv's valuable assistance, which was an example to the whole parish. Mr. M. J. Bennett and the Rev. Frazer Barton also briefly referred to the many activities and warm sympathy of the re tiring vicar. In presenting Canon Young with a cheque on behalf of the parishioners and the Sunday school pupils, the chairman expressed the regret felt bv the whole community at Canon Young's impending departure. The co-operation between vicar and curate had been a splendid example to all and it had resulted in the wonderful work done in the parish in the last few years. Canon Young expressed his appreciation of the splendid loyalty shown by all mem bers of the church and their hearty co-operation in the different branches of church work. Although he felt most keenly his severance of the ties of friend ship, many links of memory would remain to remind him of his most pleasant cori neetion with All Saints' Church. The Rev. Walter AveriH will succeed Canon Young as vicar of the parish.
