WOMEN POLiCE QUESTION. OVER-CROWDING IN SCHOOLS. A meeting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women was held last' evening, the president, Miss Carnachan, presiding. An interesting account of the work of women police was given by Miss Quayle. The following remit was received from the honorary members' association : —"That in view of tho fact that various resolutions sent to the Minister of Justice recommending the appointment of policewomen, nave had no effect, the association asks that steps be taken to initiate active propaganda with the object of getting necessary legislation passed." The following sub-committee was appointed t<t discuss the Dest means of furthering tho movement:—Mrs. N. Ferner, Mrs. Jellie, Major Gordon, Miss Carnachan, Miss Melville, Miss Quayle, and Miss flatt. A remit was received recommending that all offices and -'shops should be brought unuer the Shops and Offices Act, and that there should be an inquiry into the number of girls working under adverse conditions, with special reference to health, overtime, Fighting, heating and sick leave. The following committee was set up to obtain information on the matter: —Miss Cox, convener, Miss Basten, Miss Fiatt and Miss Jackson. A remit was received from the Teachers' Association advocating an endeavour to bring about overdue reforms, such as smaller classes in primary schools, and the provision of more classrooms, so that each class might be taught in a separate room. It was stated that' in view of the fact that classes would increase at the beginning of the New Year the matter called for urgent attention. A sub-committee was formed to consider the best means of bringing the matter before the Government at an early date. Dr. Hilda Northcroft brought up tlio matter of establisnmeril ot a special hospital, in ample grounds in a non-crowded area, tor the treatment of infectious diseases. The suggestion m Auckland to erect a new building for this purpose on the present sife was deprecated. A deputation, comprising Dr. Hilda Northcroft, Dr. Buckley Turkington, Mrs. J. Cook, Miss Carnachan and Miss Flatt, was appointed to interview the members ot the" Hospital Board. Miss is. L. Dash was appointed delegate to the council for the Society for the 'Protection of Women and Children. Mr 3. Fraer, president of 'the Dominion National Council, was nominated by the Auckland branch as delegate to the Women's Pan-Pacific Conference to b& held at Honolulu next August.
