LIQUOR AND HOLIDAYS.

SALE ON DECEMBER 26. HOTELS PERMITTED TO OPEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Monday Under the Public Holidays Amendment Act, passed on December 21, 1921, hotels are permitted to open on Monday, December 26, arid licences to sell liquor at the race meetings which take place on that day will also be granted There has been some doubt on the point, as Christmas Day this year falls on a Sunday arid the holiday is being observed on the Monday. The doubt had arisen consequent on the decision m an appeal case, Dow v. Ryan, in which it was held that'where Christmas Day falls on a Sunday ahd is by virtue of the Public Holidays Act, 910, observed on the next succeeding Monday, it is an offence under the provision of Sections 189 and 190 of the Licensing Act, 1908, for a licensee to sell intoxicating liquor in his licensed premises on that Monday

As the result of an inquiry made to day, any misapprehension on the matter has been cleared away for the simple reason that the Act of 1921 supersedes any of the, ! provisions of previous Acts regarding the opening of hotels on the day in question.
