Mrs. Connell, of Eltham, is visiting Auckland. Mrs. Luke Wilson, of Wellington, has arrived in Auckland. Mrs. A. J. North, of Wanganui, is on a visit to Auckland. Mrs. A. P. Smith and Miss Smith, ot Wellington, are visitors to Auckland. Miss Pratt, of Auckland, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. W. Stewart, in Wanganui. Mr, Justice Reed and Mrs. J. R. Reed have taken up their residence at Courtville. Miss Nor ah Livesey, of Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. K. G. Smith, in New Plymouth. Mrs. Alma Baker and Miss Baker are leaving by the Maunganui on Friday on a visit to Sydney. Miss D. Moline arrived in New Plymouth from Auckland and will stay with Miss Helen Wilson. Mr® Inues- Jones has returned to Timaru from Auckland, whore she has spent the winter months. Miss Evie Frater, who has been cn an extended visit abroad, is returning by the Makura, which arrives in Wellington to-day. Mrs. D. M. Rogers, who has been spending a holiday with Mrs. W. T. Leggett in Christchurch, has returned to Auckland. Miss M. Munn, Alameda, U.S.A., Miss M. Lynch, San Francisco, and Miss A. lligg, Wellington, are among the guests staying at the Hotel Stonehurst. Miss Beryl Hodge, Wanganui, who has been visiting Auckland and Hamilton, is now spending a fortnight in Cambridge with her sister, Mrs. Allan McCann, Fencourt. Mrs. Douglas Martin, of Ngaruawahia, has received word of her success in a sketching competition in the Australian School of Art, and has been awarded a scholarship. Mrs. J. W. Nichol, of Mount St. John Avenue, Epsom, has returned to Auckland after with her daughter, Mrs. J. Todd, at Tokomaru Bay. To terminate the successful Sunny Italy Fair that has just been held, the committee has decided to hold a dance and card evening at the Click Clack Cabaret, Newmarket, on Thursday for the benefit of those who so kindly gave their services on behalf of the Community Club, for Boys and Girls. The Belmont Presbyterian Church concluded its first Birthday Fair on Saturday afternoon and evening, when a paperhat social was held. With vocal and instrumental items, competitions and im,promptu speaking on the topics of the day, the evening passed most pleasantly. Items were contributed by Mrs. B. Roberts, Mrs. R. W. Young, Miss Gooding, Mr. G. Kessel, Mr. E. A. Bond and the Rev. S. J. Atkins. The proceeds, which amounted to £lB2, will be donated to the church fund. Mrs. E. James, aged 72, described as " the watercress queen of Covent Garden," where she was for many years a noted figure, died at Kennington recently. She was the largest supplier of watercress to the Garden, and was reputed to be the owner of the biggest watercress beds in the world, at Hurstbourne Priors, Hampshire, at Mitcham, and Beddington, in Surrey, and other places. As a child of sis she hawked watercress and when she first went to Covent Garden her day's stock consisted of a couple of baskets of watercress. Today the firm she founded handles 50 tons of cress over a week-end. The funeral, of the late Lady Brunton, wife of Sir William Brunton, formerly Lord Mayor of Melbourne, which took place in "Melbourne on October 28, was very largely attended. More than 700 people were present, and the procession was a mile long. Four cars were needed carrv the wreaths, which included tributes from Lord Somers, the Governor, the Melbourne City Council, the St. Kilda and Malvern Councils, the Melbourne Hospital Committee, the official staff of the City Council and many public institutions and business firms. There was a touching incident as the cortege was passing the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind. It halted to allow two little blind girls to place a wreath on the coffin.
