The market is firm 'at 17s to 235; exceptionally good lots, 245. PRICE OF POUND STERLING. FURTHER RISE IN NEW YORK. (.Received November 20, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. ( NEW YORK, Nov. 19. On tho StocK Exchange to-day the price of sterling cable transfers advanced to 4 dollars 87 13-16 c nts, the highest since 1914. There was an extremely heavy turnover. The demand originated chiefly in London. The belief that gold wiil shortly be moved from New York to London has been strengthened. NAVAL MEAT CONTRACT. SUPPLIES FROM DOMINIONS. (Received November 19, 5.5 p.m.) A and N.Z. LONDON, Nov. 18. Messrs. Borthwick and Company have obtained upwards of 96 per cent, of the Navy meat contract for Mediterranean ports. The firm says it does not anticipate any difficulty in commanding adequate supplies. The contract permits of Australian or New Zealand meat. If it should run short of one supply, it will use the other. A.P. A. ASSOCIATION. SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE. Particulars ot the amicable settlement of all matters in dispute • between the directorate of the Australian Provincial Assurance Association, Ltd., and the Defence Committee, 'which represented a section of the dtaareholders, are advertised in this issue. A conjoint circular issued by the chajrman of directors, Mr. Edmund S. Paul, and the chairman of the Defence Committee. Mr. .7, A. Boyd, states the terms of the settlement, the decision to support Mr Paul and to discontinue all legal proceedings. OLYMPIA MOTOR SHOW. CHARCOAL GAS AS FUEL. A. and N.Z. LONDON, Nov. 18. The High Commissioner for New Zealand. Sir James Parr, speaking at the Commercial Motor Vehicles Exhibition lunch at Olvmpia. expressed the opinion that six-wheeler cars would save 33 per cent of road wear. A new hope had been aroused in propulsion by gas derived from charcoal and cow manure. Sir James reiterated that attention to Dominion needs would reduce the present exnendituro of £15,000.0' X) on foreign vehicles by Australia and New Zealand. THE MEAT MARKET. PRICES AT SMITHFIELD. Pukekohe, report that at the weekly sale at their mart yesterday, there was an average entry of young pigs, but prices showed a decline weaners Belling at lis to 10s and slips at 17s to 18s. Poultry was penned in good numbers, with chickens forming a considerable portion of the total en- ■ try. Light hens sold at Is lOd to 2s 3d each, heavier hens at 8a to 8s 10a, and chickens from 3d to Is 6d, according to age Vegetables were in good supply, and found a ready sale.
