TROTTING.

DTAHUHTJ CLUB'S MEETING. \ [WIN FOR JEWEL POINTER. [ FAVOURITES FARE BADLY. Following a showery morning the ! feather was fine with a sharp southwesterly breeze for the opening day of the Otahuhu Trotting Club's Spring Meeting at Alexandra Park on Saturday. There •was a large attendance; the number present being well up to that of previous years. Everything passed off most pleasantly, the arrangements made by tho secretary, Mr. R. L. Absolum, working ■with smoothness throughout. The track ■was in excellent order and four of the •winners improved upon their handicap limes, while the other four winners registered very close to what they were handicapped to do. , Tho racing on the whole was very interesting, although there were a couple of disappointing contests. For tho Jelhcoe Handicap, the principal event, there >vere only six runners, but they provided a. nice race, the consistent Jewel Pointer scoring a popular victory from Black Lila ■with the favourite, Cardinal Logan, in third place. Favourites fared badly and the only ones to score were Sister Beatrice and Loch Moigh, who were at short prices. Several of the winners were only moderately fancied and returned solid dividends. The local owner, Mr. M. Moondabe, had the pleasure of winning the two principal rtw.es with his good horses Jewel Pointer and Amaris, and tho Manawatu sportsman, Mr. J. A. Mitchell, also won a doable -with Padlock, who returned the biggest dividend of the day, and Loch Moigh. NOTES ON THE RACING. SEVERAL SURPRISE WINS. PADLOCK'S SOLID DIVIDEND. To say the least of it the Introductory Handicap was thi worst race seen at the course for some considerable time, nearly every horse in the field making a mistake at tome part of the journey. Bright Light was favourite with Peter Tracey also in strong demand, and the eventual winner, Roea. at a sound price. Roez lost no time in reaching the front, and soon ran right away from her opponents to ultimately win by CO yards from the backmarker Anseline, who trotted a solid race. The> favourite, Rrieht Light, was a fair third, after breaking up early and also faulting near the oost. Peter Tracey was fourth, followed by Gold Star. Cheßsey Real Todd and Roma Binaen. Handicapped to do 3m 475, Roez went 3m 39 4-ss, so that sho reduced her handicap by a fraction over 7s. A big field of 26 paraded for the Mangere Handicap, and fancies took a wide range, with Jean McElwyn and Beatty most in demand. The favourites were not prominant at the finish, and it was left to Padlock to win and pay the biggest dividend of the day. There was some trouble at the start, caused by Silver Link who was fractious. Red S<vr went out quickly, followed by Gold Circle, Dillon Huon and Golden Grattau, with Jean McElwvn heading the others, who were some leru'ths awaj These were tr.» loading positions past the stand, but alont tha back Jean McElwyn moved up and Padlock ran through quickly. Running across the top Padlock continued fyis run and was upsides with Red Star at tho turn, where Dillon Huon and Jean McElwyn were also handy. Once they straightened up Padlock went on to win well by a length and a-half from Red Star, who defeated Dillon Huon by a length. doncerfcina finished on in fourth position, and then -jamo Golden Grattan. Gold Circle. Golden Park and Jean McElwyn. The winner hasi beon unsound for some time, otherwise ho would have been racing in better company by now. Red Star went solidly, but Dillon Huon waa, never pacing smoothly. Jea.i McElwyn had every chance. Florent Wins Cleverly. The Onehunga Handicap was a good betting race, with heavy support for Uncle Bert, Gold Jacket and Amaris. Here again backers received a reverse, as one of the least-fancied candidates in Florent proved successful. Uncle Bert failed to go away correctly, and settled his chances early, but all the others went off well, though Lady Dunmore broke badly after going a quarter. - Hypo and Wallroon (who sprinted to the fron* quickly) attended to the earlv running, closely followed by Rockburn. Woodvale, Gold Jacket and Amaris Entering on the fina- lap Woodvale and Wallroon were tho leaders, with Amaris, Gold Jacket. Florent and Rockburn i close pursuit Hypo having dropped back Three furlongs from homo Wallroon was beginning to go back, and Amaris moved up to come into the straight alongside Woodvale. with Flor ent close handy in front of Wallroon ano Gold Jacket. Floren 1 came through in ti . straight to win a good race by a head fron. Amaria, who beat Gold Jacket by threeparts of a length. Woodvale was fourth, followed by Rockburn Willroon and Dick Dillon. Gold Jacket was a trifle unlucky in the run homo and could not get through Ho was finishing on..

The six acceptors went to the post for the Jellicoe Handicap ano Cardinal Logan was backed down to a sho-t price, while Se Pearl and Jewel Pointer also found heavy support. The field moved away well, and once they settled down. Black Lila Dad charge from Anselm and Jewel Pointer, Holly Boy breaking up badly at, the end o. a couple of furlongs, to be eventually pulle«. up The backmarki rs. C: dinal Logan and Sea Pearl, closed u T at thf end of the first mile, and with j t p t> go the field w,.s in close order. Black Lila still being in front from Anselm Jewel Pointer, Cardinal Logan and Sea Pearl Jewel Point r sprinted up to Black Lila along the back and the pair led into thi nraipht just clear of Cardinal Loga*. in th run home Jewei Pointer stayed on in fine stylo to win by half a length from Black Lila. Cardinal Logan was a hea away third, thrse lengths in front of Sea i'earl, with Anselm some lengths away. Jewel Pointer is a greatly improved norse, and has a remarkable record for consistency. Black Lila paced a sound race, and Cardinal Losan made a cal lant effort, although he was a Hred horsr at the finish. The Favourite Scores. For the Stewards Handicap, Loch Moigh was made a pronounced favourite, and he justified the confident support by winning handsomely. Kingsc en began smartly "an wa3 soon out several lengths from Lord Minto and Loch Moigh, .ho had run nto third position very smartly. With a round to g? Kingsclere was still in f ron tiom Lord Minto, Festive Morn and Loch Moigh, who was clear oi Rerem The four lead ing horses drew away along the back and running across the top Loch Moigh moved up sharply to lead into tiio straight with Kingsclere, Festive Morn and Lord Minto in close attendance. Loch Moigt was no' troubled at the finish to win by a length and a-quar-ter from Kingsclere and Lord Minto, who dead-healed for second. Van Rich was running on in fourth position, followed by Festive Morn Trll Chimes, Reremai and Dad's Hope. Some of tho runners probably did not reveal their best form. Tho Sister Beatrice-Petroleuse bracket was backed down to odds-on for tho Campbell Handicap, being over twice as well supported as the second fancy. Tradesman. All moved o2 well, but The Tartar broke badly after going a couple of furlongs and effectually setttled his chance, while Petroleuse also put in a couple of skips early. King Capitalist led for a few furlongs, and then eavo wav to Sister Beatrice and Tradesman. Now and again Tradesman was inclined to leave his feet, and put *n a few short breaks, Entering on the last lap he and Sister Beatrice were still together in front closely attended by Ngatira and Peter McKinney, Petroleuse being some lengths away at the head of the others. Another skip in tho back stretch oost Tr .desman a little ground and Sister Beatrice, trotting solidly, went on to score by a length and a-half from Ngatira, Tradesman was half a length away third, and Peter McKinney fourth. Then came Petroleuse and King Capitalist. i Amaris Wins Well. The Massey Memorial Handicap attracted a useful field. Nelson Taslcor being made a good favourite, with solid backing also for Lord Nepean and Amaris. From the start Amari3 went out fast to be joined at the end ( of a few furlongs by Nelson Tasker, the pair leading past the stand brom Lady Joan, Dick Dillon and Anselm. Amaris and Nelson Tasker raced together acrosß the top and into the straight, where they vero some lengths clear of Nels< n Fame who made a fast, run along the back. Amaris stayed on at the finish and won by two and a-half lengths, from the tiring Nelson Tasker, who beat Nelson Fame by two lengths. Lord Nepean was finishing on in fourth position, and then in order were Anselm, Dick Dillon and Lady Joan. Amaris kept Nelson Tasker at it all tho way, and outstayed him at the finish. There was heavy wagering on tho Manukau Handicap, with Caprice. Daytime and Undo Bert the most in demand. Lord Minto and Kingsclere broke up at the Btart and Uncle Ber* was also a triflo slow away. Daytime went, out smartly to lead past the fitand, just clear of Huon Gratton, Scandal, Blair Audubon, Caprice (who began very smartly) and Van Rich Along tho back Huon Grattsi. dropped back and Scandal took second position in front of Van Rich and Our Patch Scandal ran up to Day time crossing the top, and tho pair were fir3t into tho straight from Van Rich and Our Patch, with Undo Bert and Kingsclero closing up. Scandal drew out at the finish to win by a length and a-half from Daytime, Undo Bert was half a length away, third, and Kingsclere close up fourth. Then followed Our Patch, Wallroon and Rua Pere. Kingsclere must havo been hard to beat only for beginning badly.

CANTERBURY GOSSIP. NOTES FROM THE TRACKS. YOUNG HORSES IN WORK. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. . Glenolg continues to give W. Warren a lot of trouble. His carofu trainer has a particularly hard job to keep the pace? even in steady work Glenelg was a brillian young pacer and high hopes were entertained that when thoroughly matured he would be in the very be*' dass. Unfortunately he became unsound and it is more than probable that the last has been Been of him on the racecourse. J. N. Clarke has made another start on the brother to Great Bingen. The colt is now three years old, and he has furnished into a good looking pacer. Audubon Chief has improved considerably of late. For some time he found the turns on the training track troublesome but he now paces in improved style. Audubon Chief looke like making a goon two-mile horse. Sadia Huon looks as though sho has done a good deal of work, and bears a welltrainwl appearanoe. G S. Smith should win s,mother race with her before tho end of the season. A sister to the trotter Young Blake is in work at New Brighton A. G. Wilson is working a good-looking mare by Calm. She is a fine young pacer and should soon be seen with the colours up. Mao Dillon is lookins, big and well. He is a useful sort when at his Dest, and his painstaking trainer, J. D. Smith, has a good opinion of him. A recent arrival to A. G. Wilson's stable is a three-year-old gelding by Taraire. He goe3 at the pacing gait and he may make a useful sort. Ouimet is now back again with his old mentor, G. F. Robinson," at New Brighton. The pacer is very much on the big side at present. Nelson Price has just startod on a three-year-old filly by Logan Pointer from a mare by Frannie. She is a well-grown and a good-gaited youngster. The tHroe-year-old Dorie raced quite as veil as was expected in the Derby at Addington. He is going on capitally in has work at New Brighton. The trotter Nancy McKinney is doing well in her work at New Brighton. The mare did not race at all well at Greymouth last, month but it was discovered that her teeth were causing her much trouble. This may have accounted for her bad displays. G. S. Smith is now working his three-year-old by Lee Norris from Maori Princess at tho pacing gait. The New Brighton trainer has no intention of racing the youngster as a pacer but is just moving him along at the pacing gait preparatory to putting him into faster work at trotting. The young horse is apparently quite sound again. Harley Dillon, who has been in G. F. Robinson's stable since he commenced racing, has been purchased by C. Donald and will in future Jbe trained at Belfast. Harley Dillon showed plenty of speed when ho was in training, but he would not do his best in a race. Possibly a change of trainers may make an improvement. Avenger seems to be none the worse for his racing at Addington. The pacer should win somo races before the season closes.
