IMPORTATION OF PIGS.

ARRIVALS BY WA ITEM ATA.; TWELVE PEDIGREE ANIMALS. Twelve pedigree Canadian pigs, which were shipped at Vancouver on the Union Company's steamer Waitemata, reached Auckland last evening. 'Six of the animals are of the large Yorkshire type recommended by the New Zealand MeatProducers Board as the most suitable to establish New- Zealand bacon on the British market. The other six are of the Taniworth breed. . ■ Three of the Yorkshire pigs are from the State of Ontario and three front British Columbia. They were chosen for the consignee, Mr. C. W. Anderson, of Kohimarama, by Mr. G. B. Rothwell, who is chief husbandman of all Canadian State farms. Tho pigs are "the first to .bo imported from the .Northern to tho Southern Hemisphere in 11 years. The frequent outbreaks of swine fever and foot and mouth disease had been tho means of the New Zealand Government prohibiting the importation of livestock to this country. The need of new blood and the fact that Canada has been free of animal disenso for the last six months influenced the Department of Agriculturo to_ allow toe import of the pigs'under special permit.
