CITY EXPENDITURE.
Sir,—l wish to expresse the appreciation of many ratepayers at Mr. W. H. Murray's action in bringing forward his charges of waste of public moneys. Atthe request of a considerable section. ,of ratepapers, I, some time ago, wrote, to the town clerk asking for an independent investigation/into certain specific matters and also into the administration of certain departmental activities, and stating that " there was a very'considerable feeling shared by a large rfumber of ratepayers that the department needs- considerable revision. There have been many Incidents of needless waste, duplication, and scant consideration of requirements and results." This letter was donsidered by the Works Committee, which resolved that no action be taken. A further letter addressed to the Mayor and councillors was referred by the council to the Works Committee again, Without opportunity of discussion. Their report on this matter came before the council again with many other items, and their recommendation was adopted without consideratiein fay the council. Before the recent elections I discussed this matter with several 'councillors, who were agreed that general dissatisfaction was rife, and-at least one member gave a definite promise, mbre than once to move in" the matter, but I presume has been to?) busy with other matters, so far, There is far too. much secrecy in many of t)ie, doings o): the council, and it would be a wise move, and tend to -restore confidence in our civic administration, if the council set up a proper dommittee *6f investigation, pre farafyly an independent one. , N. R. W. .Thomas,:
