THE BUS SERVICES.

Sir, —There is mtfch- talk about the so.called City Council bus ; services, but it,js obviously wrong .to call service?,' The Tramways Comiruitee Has" loii£ since fbrgqtten the 'nteaiiinjj of A| Mr;' iillilift" has a "strong-prejudice against motor-buses, it is not likely that he -will make a very big effort to make ,jthem pay. In fact, so much is being done -by the Tramways Committee to make bus .travelling an inconvenience and; annoyapca that he will no doubt soon be able t» point to a deserted bus service and-say, "I told you it was a failure." And the public wiil have every reason to retort, "Who made it a failure?',* Every daily passenger from Glen Eden—and Ijve. no doubt other outlying districts, too—inows that Mr. Allum's statement to tlie effect that "there are, indications that there r is not enough population to warrant a bus service' —is. wtong. The buses before eight in the morning are crowded-before they reach New Lynn, and this after many people -have gone back ,to a train service which leaves much to be desired, but is still above the level the buses-have now reached. .Many people have gone to live in this-' district in the last two years with the knowledge of a good bui service at their disposal. The loss of this service and increase in fares has ; been, a sad blow to them. Jti> is cheering to'sea that .the , various 'town boards are 3 uniting in an effort to secure better conditions for their; people and I wish them every success in their project. Gxen Edeki£E. •

Sir,-—The City Council talk—a"nd actas if their feeder services were put on at the desire of the public and for: their convenience. They say the services can only be continued so long as they pay, and that if they do not pay they will' be (some have baen) taken off, or else the district concerned will have to pay a subsidy. Well, we did not ask for feeder services, and we do not like them. We had our own omnibus companies and were happy- Why can we not go hack to that! It is a monstrous thing that the interests of individuals should bo sacrificed; the value of property depreciated and the progress of a borough retarded, merely to enable the city tramways to make profits. SUBCEBANITE.
