CHURCH ANNIVERSARY.

ST. STEPHEN'S, OPOTIKI. AN INTERESTING HISTORY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI, Friday. The 52nd anniversary of St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Of)otiki, will be celebrated on Sunday, when thanksgiving services will be conducted by Archdeacon Brocklehurst. St. Stephen's is one of. the most historic churches in New Zealand. The building was erected in 1860 by the Rev. C. Volkner. During the Maori rising in 1865 Mr. Volkner took his wife to Auckland, and returned, hoping to be able to influence the Maoris. Mr. Volkner was subsequently killed, and is buried beneath the church." The Government held the church as a fort for ten years, but handed it back in 1875. and it was consecrated by Bishop Williams on November 21 in that year.
