MOUNT EDEN AFFAIRS.
Sir, —The engineer, in his letter of 9th lust., evades my main direct question, why the Rautangi Road block was not connected to the city sewer in Owen's Road years ago. Was it executive opposition ? He seems to be proud of Mount Eden having a real "watertight" system of drainage of its own (many would say for want of it), and disregarding natural levels and people's health- The Borough Council also intends continuing the taihoa system of small jobs in regard to the recent large loan, spreading it over four years. In the meantime hcuse-huilders will still have to pay for the old soak holes and Beptics. Will the Health Department stand for all this ? It is a pity that Parliament did not extend the powers of the Auckland District Drainage Board (which, I was quite aware, provides all main sewers), allowing it to put sewers into every suburb without interference by any council. If it had, the drainage of this borough would have been completed years ago. The sewer in Pencarrow Avenue just below Penrhyn Avenue was completed in July, 1922. The drainage from Chamberlain and Penrhyn Avenues was not connected up until the end of 1925. Why? Where does it go to? And who did the urging? Ratepayer.
