AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL. The championship meeting arranged by the Auckland Centre, Mew Zealand Amateur Athletic" Association, for Saturday nest', in aid of the Mayor's unemployment relief fund, is attracting considerable attention, and there should be a long list of nominations on Tuesday next. In addition to the lengthy and varied programme of athletic, cycling and field events, it is the intention to arrange dancing competitions, while it is probable that displays will be given by the Auckland Girls' Athletic Association. A large number of athletes and cyclists are in training, and competition promises to be keen. The meeting of A. J. Elliott and L. C. Williams in the sprint events alone should be worth going to see. On Labour Day these runners finished practically on terms just behind the third man, J. L. McCoy, in the final of the 100 yds. handicap. Gordon Kells did not run against J. W. Savidan last Monday, but the New Zealand champion met a worthy rival in J. S. Watt, who won the 880 yds. handicap olf 6yds. M. P. Byrnes, J. H. Wade, F. J. Casey and other speedy wheelmen will make the cycle races interesting, while «L W. Shirley, 13. M. Murray, D. Kerr-Taylor and others will be seen in the hurdling events. Altogether the programme should be one of the best ever submitted at an Auckland provincial amateur championship meeting.
