LIGHTING BUSINESS AREA.

THAMES, Friday. The Thames Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. YV. Bongard, presiding: The resident engineer, Public Works Department, advised that Hon. K. S. Williams had approved of a subsidy in connection with utilisation of unexpended balance of unemployment relief monies for tree planting purposes on the borough reserve at Tararu. The Chamber of Commerce advised that 14 local businesses desired to take advantage of the council's amended charges far a community lighting scheme with a minimum requirement of 25 lights. The Hon 0. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, expressed regret that it was not possible to accede to a request for the appointment of a resident fields instruction officer for the Hauraki Plains. The engineer, Mr. J. E. Anderson, reported that heavy| ra ' n caused the slipping of a portion of the quarry face. In the absence of outside orders the quarry would close temporarily and all hands would be suspended on November 2. The report was adopted. It was decided to authorise the Thames Valley Power Board to erect an 11,000volt electric power line from Parawai to the borough power station.
