FINANCES FOR HALF-YEAR. COST OF WATER COMMISSION. MUCH PERMANENT WORK DONE. • The Onehunga Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor. Mr. W C Coldicutt, presiding. The Director-General of Health wrote that unless the council paid its share of the cost of the Water Commission, he would have to refer the matter to the Crown solicitor for legal proceedings. It was decided to refer the matter to the Prime Minister and the member of Parlia ment for the district. Mr. W. J. Jordan. A statement presented by the town clerk, Mr. H. A. Yockney, showed that in the half-year ended September 30 the revenue was £27,147, and the expenditure £24,729. The Mayor remarked that this was over a half-year's allotment, but with careful administration there was no need for worry. Mr E Morton said the good feature in the position was that a good deal of permanent work had been done out of revenue, instead of out of loans, and he thought they should continue the policy, even if it entailed an ovt'draft Mr H Campling, chairman ot the Streets Committee detailed the permanent work done, costing £2400 He said they should now endeavour to mprove the foot paths. He congratulated the office staff for getting out the statement one day aftei the close of the half-year. In connection "with the new area taken over from the One Tree Hill Road Board, the latter agreed to the council'" proposal that the council maintain Oranga Avenue and Hauiti Road, and the board maintain Rock field Road from Mount Smart Road to Oranga Road. It was pointed out that the work on Rockfield Road necessitated formation as well as maintenance, and the point will be referred back to the boara. The turncock reported that the 4in. main was connected up on September 30 at Namata R.ad, and the main disconnected from the One Tree Hill Board s supply in four streets. On reading the rtieters on October 1 he found that 14 consumers in the new area were using the water extravagantly. It was decided to retain meters on those properties. Building permits had been issued for 11 dwellings and 13 other buildings during the past fortnight. For the month of September the permits for dwellings numbered 19, to a value of £14,050, besides other buildings and alterations, estimated at £I3BB. , The Mayor mentioned that in the borough there were two thoroughfares named Elizabeth Street As they were nrohnbly named after Mrs Elizabeth Yates, a former Mayor of Onehunga, he moved that one be called Yates Street This course was adopted.
