STRAWBERRY SEASON.

FRUIT LATE THIS YEAR. EFFECT OF WET WEATHER. A DEVASTATING FUNGUS. The strawberry season is likely to be later this year than in previous years owing to the almost continual wet weather during the past few weeks. The beds from which Auckland draws its supply, notably those at Northcote, Glenfield, Birkdale and Mount Roskill, are not nearly as advanced as they were at this time last year Supplies in small quantities can be expected toward the end of this month, or early in November, Growers, especially at' Northcote, are faced with the problem of combating a devastating root fungus which is destroying hundreds of the plants. In some cases two-thirds of a bed has been demolished. Government experts have been concentrating their attention cn methods for destroying the fungus, but so far without success. The fungus attacks the roots, and on a fine day the plants attacked completely wilt and die.
