NOTES ON THE RACING. ROTOWHERO'S BIG DIVIDEND. CERF TOO GOOD FOR DEGAGE, [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] PALMERSTON NORTH. Friday. Rotowhero. who won the Maiden Race at the Otaki meeting and returned a sensational dividend, is a three-year-old by Gasbag. He is owned by the Hon. T. M. Wilford. Cerf just beat Degage in the open handicap and Crown Area won the open sprint very easily. C. Broughton, rider of Duko Abbey, was warned for careless riding. The track was hard and very fast, but some of the times recorded are open to doubt. Elysianor and Peshwa carried the bulk of the money in the Kapiti Hack Hurdles. Peshwa just led Elysianor at the last fence, but once over Elysianor came again to beat Peshwa by a head. Vexatious was two lengths away third and Panorama. Joyeuse and Patuki followed at intervals. Elysia- . nor won very well and Peshwa and Vexatious ran solid races. Benrmire was very erratic. In the Pulii Maiden Plate Aro De Val. Maui and Shining Star carried the bulk of the money, but it was left to the rank outsider, Rotowhero. to lead the _ field home, paying one of the biggest dividends of recent times. Shining Star and Rotowhero were well clear of Helotis and Maui at the turn and Rotowhero, finishing strongly, beat Shining Star by a head. Helotis was three lengths away, third, and Maui. Little Queen, Aro De Val. Dainty Ways and Kindle followed in that order. Rotowhero and Shining Star both began, from outside barrier positions. Maui was a little unlucky. For the Kaitihiku Hack Handican Keddar was a pronounced favourite, with good money for Anolo. Rowley, Henna, Vigilance Essential and Airtight were also well backed. At tbe end of a furlong Vigilance was showing the way to Keddar and Pangolin, with Airtight, Volplane and Essential next, and Rowley and Anolo in tbe rear. Although Keddar was ridden out he failed by two lengths to reach Vigilance. Rowley was a length away third and Airtight. Henna. Twink and Anolo next. Vigilance won well enough to suggest better things, but Keddar ran a solid race. Rowley was a trifle unlucky. In the Ling Memorial Stakes Degage was backed down to a short price. Nukumai. Shining Armour and Cerf were also well backed. Six furlongs from home Santiago wont into the lead from Our Jack, with Shining Armour, Cerf. Degage. Rouex and Nukumai following in that order. Cerf went un to the leaders three furlongs from home, wbere Degage also improved. At the turn Cerf just led from Santiago. Nukumai. Shining Armour. Our Jack and Degage. The last-named finished very web, but Cerf always held her off and won by half a length. Nukumai was balf a length away third, with Rouex fourth and Our Jack and Shining Armour next. This was Cerfs first race in open comnany. For the Pahiko Hack Handican Avro waa backed down to odds on, with Duke Abbey the only other supported. Duke Abbey was very stubborn at. the barrier and eventually the field was sent off without him. Mandy and Borselene led out from Bronstell ana Bank Draft with Avro and Duke Abbey at the tail of the field. Duko Abbey rushed through inside two furlongs. Mandy ran wide at the turn and Duke Abbey came up on the inside and won with tbe greatest ease by two lengths from Avro who beat Mandy by a length for second plaoe. Bronstell was fourth and Bissac and Borselene next. Duke Abbey won well after being left. He should bo very useful when he has better manners at the barrier. In the Waifawa Handicap Crown Area was backed down to a short price. Lausanne and Mireusonta led out with Crown Area last., but Crown At©» was in third place at the turn. The four horses were roughly in lino a furlong from home bat Crown Area drew out to win very comfortably by half a length from Mireusonta, who beat Lausanne by a neck, with Kilbronsyth less than a length away. Dtluge was last. Crown Area beat the field pointless. For the Taumanuka Hack Handicap Bisox was a decided favourite with a fair amount of support for Boy and Oratrix. When they settled down Land Rent and Oratriz led from Boy, Kilmoyler and Mister Gamp, with Bisox and Koauau well back. Oratrix led into the straight from Land Rent. Mister Gamp and Boy, with Bisox closing up. Oratrix ran wide and Boy, coming up on the inside, just got up. to win by half a head. Mister Gamp was three lengths away third and Kilmoyler and Koauau were next. R. Reed got Boy home by superior riding. In the concluding event Waicullus, Orassone and Joy, Bird carried the bulk of the money. Royal Land and Horomea led to the turn from Orazone, Beaumont. Paitonu, Waicullus and Joy Bird. Once in line Beaumont came through and Waicullus put in a good run on the outside. Beaumont stayed on and won by half a length from Waicullus with Orazone a length and a-half away third. Passionate was fourth and then came Horomea, J<oy Bird and Vesperua. Joy Bird and Horomea should do better, but Waicullus appeared & tziflo unlucky.

THE FORM AT KUROW. RAPIER'S CUP VICTORY[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Rapier was backed in the Kurow Cup yesterday a a if defeat was out of the Question. He duly won and possibly he could h%ve beaten Vaward by a little more but he did not score in exceptionally easy fashion. He ran past Taboo without apparent effort at the entrance to the straight but when Vaward came on the'scene a little later on Emerson seemed to be a trifle uneasy for a few strides and was kicking the favourite up to his work. At the same time the race served to direct attention to the fact that Rapier will have to be reckoned with in big ovents further on in the season. Vaward's form in the Kurow Cup was far ahead of what he showed at Geraldine last week. Taboo ran well until the straight was reached but his finishing effort was not good. Improved form may be expected soon. Cornstalk helped to eet a solid pace for about seven furlongs and then suffered interference which settled his chances. Aberfeldy's form in the Hakataramea Handicap at Kurow was a vast improvement on what he showed at Geraldine. He was always going on in fine style in front. Rascal threw out a challenge on reaching the straight but never looked like getting on terms. It was a very attractive performance and Aberfeldy now looks like winning more races before he goes back to hurdling. Schottische was unlucky at Geraldine last week and she made amends in the Publicans' Handicap at Kurow. She was always well placed behind the speedy Solgele. whom she beat without an effort when she made her run in the straight. Schottische is a smart galloper who can run on a good deal further than six furlongs. Solgele has a fine burst of speed, but although useful up to five furlongs he seems unable at present to run out six. He stopped very quickly yesterday. Money Mine need not be condemned for his failure. Felony was unlucky in the Novice Plate. He met trouble afther going about a furlong and lost a Jot of ground. He finished so well that it looked as if the mishap spoiled a good chance, and he may soon make amends. All Comment, who carries the same colours as Taboo, was chopped out at the start He did not appear in the picture until the straight was reached, when he put in a smart run. A little later on ho may be winning Rood races. Donne, the winner, showed promising form- at Geraldine, where he finished on well after a slow beginning. The experience evidently did him a lot of good, as in yesterday's race he jumped out smartly and won easily. Donn® is owned bv the Riccarton trainer, F. P. Claridge, who received him as a gift aomis time ago. DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING. FIRST DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. [BY TEI.EGEAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Friday.
