WANGANUI CHAMPIONSHIP. J. GOSS BEATEN BY McNIVEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI, Friday. The Wanganui golf championship is attracting great interest and a feature of the eliminating rounds to-day was the defeat of J. Goss, ex-amateur champion of New Zealand, by R. McNiven, a young player who has come into prominence within the last year. The first two holes were halved and McNiven won the next three. Goss got into difficulties at the sixth and seventh and conceded the holes. Playing steadily at the "quarries," Goss won the hole in 4 to 6 and at "Land's End" McNiven conceded the hole. At the next Goss sank an 18ft. putt for a three. McNiven two up. "Long Tom" was halved in 5 and Goss won the 12th in 3 to 4. McNiven 1 up. The next two holes were halved and Goss conceded the 15th. , Goss won at "Bunker's Hill" by 4 to 5 and the 17th was halved in 5. Both had good tee shots at the 18th. Goss' second was on the green and McNiven sliced his second. The latter holed in 4 and Goss made a big effort, but had to be content with halving the hole, McNiven thus winning, 1 up. Another good match was between J. C. Bidwill and H. G. Dale, the former winning, 3 and 2, Bidwill played good steady golf. Dale went out in 38 and was one over fours coming in up to the 16th hole. The Eltham player was outdriving Bidwill from 10 to 20 yards, but the latter made some great recoveries.
