OPOTIKI INTERESTS.

BRIDGE TENDER ACCEPTED. NAMES ON INSCRIPTION PLATE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI, Friday. The Opotiki Chamber of Commerce met last evening. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded Mr. Lees, of Whakatane, who represented Opotiki at the conference in Wellington with Ministers, in connection with the duty on maize, and to the Hon. K. S. Williams, M.P., for the district, for the assistance be had given in tho matter. A letter was received from the Minister of Agriculture replying to a letter from the chamber protesting against the importation of weevily maize. The Minister said the Government could not see its way to do anything further in the matter. Members decided that it was no good taking further action. The Post-master-General wrote refusing to forward the same evening mails arriving at Rotorua at 5 p.m. It was unanimously resolved to urge that mails should be despatched from Rotorua at 7 a.m., instead of 9, as at present. When the Opotiki County Council mot this morning Mr. Joblin, the new member, was welcomed by the chairman, Mr. J. J. Moody. The tender of J. J. Kerr, at £IOOB lis 6d, was accepted for the Waioroi Bridge. A petition was received from settlers on Tirohanga Road asking for tho road to be metalled. The engineer is to report on the cost at the next meeting. Mr. Gault reported to the. council that the cost of erecting a bridge across the Otara River at Vanstone's corner would bo too heavy for the few ratepayers directly concerned. It was agreed that applications should be made to the Government for a grant to assist the settlers. Mr. F. S. Dyson, district Public Works engineer, states that plans for the Motu Bridge are completed, but it is understood a few details have yet to be put in the specifications before tenders are actually called. At the County Council meeting there was* a lively debate on the question of what names should be inscribed on the inscription plate to bo put on the Waioeka Bridge. At a recent conference between members of the Borough Council and the County Council it was decided to put on tho names of the Mayor and the county chairman to-day. Mr. Hogg pointed out that Mr. Reid had been chairman for several years, being superseded by the present chairman only last April. He considered Mr. Reid's name should not be omitted. After a heated argument the council carried a resolution by 11 votes to 3 that the name of Mr. Roid only should be inscribed on the plate.
