ROTOWARO STOP-WORK MEETING

Sir,—l take the liberty to write you in regard to the report that appeared in the Herald of Wednesday last, in regard to the stop-work meeting held at Rotowaro mine on Tuesday. The part of the report we object to is that the men did not arrive until nine o'clock. That is not the case. The meeting was finished and all the men walked from the mine to Rotowaro station, a distance of three-quarters of a mile, to get the train for Huntly. The distance, from Rotowaro to Huntly is six miles, and the men were at Huntly at nine o'clock. The true facts of the case are that the manager did warn the men two weeks ago that they had to have their lamps out by 8.15 a.m. But he did not wait till that time. He gave the lampman orders to close the door at 8 o'clock. If he had waited till 8.15 a.m. the men would have gone to work, as the meeting was finished between 8.15 and 8.20 a.m.* H. Gavin. President, Rotowaro Miners' Union.
