WATERSIDERS AT PLAY SURROUNDED BY POLICE. TWENTY-THREF MEN FINED. [BT TELEGRAPH. —PBE3S ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Friday During slack times the wharf employees are in the habit of indulging in games of chance, according to facts disclosed in the Police Court to-day. Work being slack this afternoon about 20 wharf employees decided to play at hazards and "penny" poker at the Thorndon breastwork- A large bos was used as a table and forms were placed ronnd it. Fifteen men were playing at hazards and nearby eight others played "penny" poker. Suddenly Detective Tricklebank and several constables from the police station surrounded the players and arrested them. The look-out man ran away, but was overtaken by motor. A late sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. The 23 men were convicted and fined £2 each, in default, seven days' imprison, ment. They were given seven days in which to pay.
