UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

SIXTY MEN NOW ENGAGED. NEW WORKS CONTEMPLATED. RECREATION AREA AT EPSOM. A total of 66 men were employed yesterday on unemplpyment relief works controlled by the Auckland City Council, and it is hoped to take on a further number in due course. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, stated the city engineer was preparing plans for additional works, and details would be laid before the Unemployment Committee at its meeting on Friday. A further nine men began work on the City Council's reserve at Epsom yesterday, making 19 in all. This number will increase as the scheme develops. The number employed in the Outer Domain upon the formation of approaches to the War Memorial Museum is 38. A little later it should be possible to find work for 50 or 60 on this job. There arc a further nine men on the City Council's recreation reserve at Point Chevalier, but as the formation work there is nearly finished they will not be required much longer. The men at Epsom have made a good start with clearing away gorse and other growth, cutting down hummocks and filling up hollows. It is thought possible the work may be extended to another reserve nearby, and that arrangements may be made to close the road running between the two properties, so as to create a recreation ground of about eight acres. This larger scheme will make work for a much increased number of men. OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE. CONCERT BY THE BLIND.

The finance sub-committee of the unemployment fund yesterday received a generous offer from the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society to give the entire proceeds of a performance of " La Mascotte," at His Majesty's Theatre tomorrow evening to the fund. The front-of-the-house staff also offered its services free and J. C. Williamson, Ltd., through Mr. Bert. Royle, expressed willingness to remit any claim for the rent of the theatre. The committee decided with regret that as it would be debarred from advertising the performance until immediately beforehand for fear of injuring the society's receipts, it could not accept the offer. However, it thanked all concerned for their generosity. A concert in aid of the fund will be given in the Town Hall concert chamber to-morrow evening by inmates of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, assisted by a number of leading Auckland artists. The City Council's tramway and outdoor staffs are arranging to make regular contributions to the fund, as the salaried officers have done already. The committee wishes it known that no persons are authorised to canvass for subscriptions to the fund. If any official collectors are appointed, the fact will be publicly notified.
