AKARANA YACHT CLUB.

j VERY SATISFACTORY YEAR.. PROVISION OF CLUBHOUSE. A very satisfactory position is revealed in the 32nd annual report of the Akarana Yacht Club to be presented to the annual meeting next Tuesday evening. Six days were devoted to racing, the entries for the season totalling 340. The membership had increased and a number of new boats had been placed on the club's register. Generally speaking, the racing had been very interesting and so close was the contest for the points flan *bat three boats. Wild Wave, Winifred and Manene, actually gained 20| points each. By consent of the owners lots were drawn and Wild Wave was the fortunate winner of the flag. It was pleasing to record that after being without a clubhouse for 32 years, the club would soon possess sv fine home of its own. A splendid site had been obtained in Mechanics' Bay from the Harbour Board and work on the new building had actually been commenced. The building would be 70ft. by 41ft, and would have two storeys. On the ground Hoor provision had been made for lockers, stowing dinghies, etc., while the upper storey would be used for holding dances, meetings, socials, etc. To finance the .clubhouse, debentures bearing 6j per cent, were now being offered by the club and were being taken up by members and others interested in yachting. 'I he clubhouse would fill a long-felt, want, more especially ss the sheds in Judge's Bay must be removed by November, leaving Paineli yachtsmen no place to keep their dinghies and gear. Situated right in the comer on the western side of the eastern tide deflector, the clubhouse would have skids running into both Mechanics' ami Judge's Bay, which would be very handy for yachtsmen keeping their boats in either of these bays. The'* clubhouse was being built by voluntary labour under the supervision of the club's honorary architct, Mr. M. K. Draifin, and it was anticipated the building would be ready for Occupation in November or early in December. With the object of raising funds for the clubhouse, the club took space at the Winter Show, but owing to the. stalls being situated in the open and the bad weather experienced, the club did not meet, with Iho success it had hoped for. During the year the club decided to become an incorporated body. New rules and regulations were drawn up and adopted at a special meeting called for the purpose. The application for incorporation has now been granted. The balance sheet shows a good credit balance in addition to well over £4OO aside for the building fund. Nominations for flag officers closed on Monday as follows s—Commodore, Mr, A, Bratind; vice-commodore, Mr. T Mi Kay ; rem commodore, MM. F. W, ,letter* ami W. Laurie. PUKE OF YORK'S TROPHY. WIN FOR AMERICAN BOAT. Particulars of the annual contest for the I Duke of York's trophy reached Auckland by the last English mail. Three days were devoted to the contest, which was held off Southampton over a 30 miles course of 10 laps. The rac* is an international one, but for various reasons only America and Great Britain were represented in flits year's fixture. France and Germany had entered, but both their representatives failed to start. Great Britain's team consisted of Miss M. B. Oarstftir's Newg, Sunbeam engine; Count Johnston No#d'» Betty, Sunbeam engine; and Mr. F. T. Bersey's Bela, I.aystall engine. America was represented by only one boat, Little Spitfire, which proved the winner. Newg carried off the f»riia last year and Bela is * newcomer, fitted with a new type of engine, bull! by Mr. Bcrsey himself. Leumas, a new boat, owned by Miss Cafstairs, fitted with, a Sunbeam engine, acted as a reserve to the British team. Little Spitfire look the lead right through the firs}, day's racing. Her average sp««td wm only *30.8 knots, whieh j* low, as the average in 1826 was 39 3 for a complete round. The second day Little Spitfire finished two laps ahead of Newg, Mis* Betty lost 10 minutes through breakage of a wafer-pipe, causing a short circuit, and Bela finished firing on only three cylinder*. The final day wss fairly rough and Newg and Little Spitfire were very cl«e over the whole course, the speeds being 28.4 knot# and 28.6 knots respectively. News? actually did foiir of the Um laps at a higher speed than the American. Mis* Betty averaged 23.4 knots. Bela was a non starter. The winnor, Little Spitfire, is an eighth cylinder supercharged Miller angina craft—similar to the 1926 American com* patitors—and is capable of running tip to 6800 r p m., at an output of over IV> b.h p ft Si* j# owned by Mr# ,t H, ftaftd, jttnr., and was handled in all her race* by Mr. H. Snoddy. "The trophy was pfaasjsted to Mrs, Band by Viscount Canton, of tfee Marine Motoring Association, at tha conclusion of the content. FASBINO ITEMS.
