SANDERS CUP CONTEST.

OTAGO CHALLENGER WANTED 1 . SUGGESTION FOR NEW BOAT. TIT SPINDRIFT. A very important statement regarding Otago's present position in connection with the Sanders Cup contest, was made by Mr. H. E. Moiler at the annual meeting of the JRaveasbourne Boating Club. He said many people were wondering what class of boat was going to represent the province at the next contest. Some j were of opinion the 14-footer had had lis j day, but this was not so. So far as he could learn there was little prospect Of anyone building a new Ron a type boat in Ota go. There were five boating clubs in Otago, and he suggested each club should contribute £2O, and the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association about £SO to build an up-to-date Rona type boat. There were rumours that Avaion was to be j brought from Auckland to Dunedtn. U J that were true* then it would fill the j breach, as Avaion was one of the latest j models. Ths last contest at Lyttelton ; had shown beyond doubt that Winifred, j although she had proved tha fastest 14footer in Otago, was simply outclassed by the latest Rona type boats. Mr. Moller said it was quite clear that Otago would again be out of the hunt at the next contest if the province had to depend on a selection from the present 14-footers in the harbour. Those yachtsmen who witnessed the races for the Sanders Cup at Lyttelton in February last were convinced that Betty, Avaion, Murihikn 11. and Roi>a were far superioi to the others taking p,\rt in the competition. He felt the Otago yacht clubs and the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association should raise"sufficient money for the purpose of building a new boat to represent the province. Thev had now reached that stage wh a r<? something must be done to bring Otago into line with Ihs other provinces. At a meeting of the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association last week an application was received from the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association for a complete set of plans and offsets of the Rona type boat. Mr. J, T. Paul, chairman of the Otago Association laid emphasis on the fact that the plans should be duly stamped as correct to ensure a boat being true to type. In view of this application and the appeal made by Mr. Moller there ar* now prospects of Otaco being represented in the contest with a new boat. ROYAL YACHT SQUADRON. REVIEW OF PAST SEASON. NEW HAULING-OUT SITE. The fifty-sixth annual report of the Royal New Zealand Yacht. Squadron to he presented to the annual meeting on Friday, September 50, states the activities of the squadron during the past season, have, as in previous years, been devoted to the encouragement, and furtherance of the sport. The membership now stands at 324 town members, Q4 country, none honorary and life, 12 junior, and 53 absentee, making a total i of 492. Thirty-seven boats were hauled out on the squadron's slipway this winter. It was very much to be regretted that the tenancy of the slipway site had been terminated by the. Auckland Harbour Board. The gradual elimination of all nosmble hauling out localities on the harbour front liad now rendered the slipway a necessity for the owners of the larger boats. This fact had been realised by the Harbour Boad and the squadron had been granted the use of an are* on tha Eastern Reclamation until the construction of permanent haulingout sites in the vicinity of the new boat harbour. The change at'this time was particularly unfortunate in that the squadron would lose some of the capital sunk In the undertaking which was possible of recovery with a few more years in the present position. The removal of the plant to the new site would be undertaken by the. Harbour Board, but the cost would be borne by the squadron. In taking over the new "site the squadron would be responsible for the hauling out of boats other than those belonging to squadron members. Building of Hew Crsft. It is recorded with pleaaurf) that there would be two additions to th« squadron's 18ft. restricted class and that Mf. E. j. Kelly was launching a fine 45ft. crnising launch to replace the Daisy. It was also pleasing to note that the keel yachts, Ilex and Thelma, would again be afloat this season, the former being now owned by Mr. E. 11. Northcroft, and the latter by Messrs. Hume and Creagh. Good entries were maintained In all club events. The extended cruising face to Te Kama proved very popular. It has been decided to allocate the T. M. Alexander Memorial Cup to this race. Tc Kume Harbour wss a particular favourite of the late Vice-Com-tsodore and the committee considers the continuance of this race, carrying with it the memorial cup, would best serve to perpetuate his memory. The 18ft, restricted class was increasing in popularity and the racing was followed with inter j est by a large number of yachtsmen 0 I the public, alike. Mr, 0. H. Rissltng had given a Mrtea of Most interesting and instructive lectures on the Rule of the Road. The-* lectures had h*en thrown open to all young yarhUmen and had been well patronised. A new system for the issue of warrants had been instituted by the Admiralty, consequent upon which all warrants had been recalled and would be tastied next i November. Owners were expected to j avail themselves of the privilege of f!v- ] ing the blue ensign. Mention is also made of the decease of the following members of the squadron Sir Arthur Myers, and Messrs. D. Archibald, W. M Evast, T. M'Menemy. L- <*. Mahon, Jo fen Wiseman and Captain i. Ryan. items in Baia&oe-thMi. The baUnfts-afcaet reveal* * very satisfactory pasiifctt.
