SOME INTERESTING DISPLAYS. ? ; ; • v.#/ The Devonport Shield competition, played under the auspices of the Auckland Hockey Association, was continued at the Remuera grounds on Saturday afternoon. The playing areas were soft and slippery and the adverse conditions militated against high-class expositions. University and St. Luke's provided ft fast and interesting display, in which the former showed : superior tactics and finish and eventually ran out winners. Somerville met with stiff opposition from Wesley and it only won after a stub-bornly-contested game. Results are as follows: ' Somerville, 4, beat Wesley, 2. University, 3, beat St. Luke's, 1. The forwards showed good stickwork and faij combination, and launched a series of strong attacks: Leonard and Hume, with cjever defensive play, checked tho movements and a . well-placed clearing hit by Radcnfie enabled University to counteratiack. With a smart run on the left flank Philpotts placed University in a good position Exciting p'lay followed in St. Luke's circle, but Williams -and Mills effected a good clearance. Craig made a breakaway for St. Luke's, and then a penalty corner was intercepted and Philpotts raced through to the opposite circle. Stubborn defence by St. Luke's prevented University from scor ing. A sortie for St. Luke's, initiated by Mills, saw the forwards gain possession and a beautifully-placed centring hit by Giles was converted by Bay. who scored with a great shot. University retaliated with a concerted central offensive that brought the St.. Luke's rearguard into strenuous opposition. Close play followed in St. Luke's circle until Robertson, with a clever speculator, cleared to midfield. St. Luke's rallied. and a movement reached University's twenty-five, where Leonard stopped progress. ■Philpotts and Millar invaded file St. Luke's circle, the fonner's shot being blocked by Robertson. Giles and Brown gained ground lor bt Luke s, but University countered with a brilliant dash by Philpotts. Hamilton and Seelen. Williams stopped cleverly, but University returned and gained. a penalty corner, which was intercepted by Craig. Bay led a strong attack for St. Luke s, and Duncan sent a hard shot over the net. Hay was conspicuous for University and from his centre Hamilton made a good effort to score, his shot being well a topped by Burnett. Continuing aggressive tactics. University scored through the agen.oy oi Philpotts, who netted with a brilliant shot. The half-time scores were: St. Luke's. 1: University, 1. -Upon changing round St. Luke's immedii ately attacked until Hume stopped progress. Bay broke through for St. Luke's, his shot being well cleared by Linton. Craig next had an unsuccessful Bhot for St. Luke's. Millar launched a fine attack for University that culminated in Hamilton scoring. A sortie by St. Luke's promised well, but Brown raced, back and saved. With clever stickwork and good combination University came through in the centre, Seelen goalibg with a well-placed shot. St. Luke's made determined efforts and Linton was called upon to stop two shots. St. Luke's obtained a penalty corner, but Hamilton intercepted. and from his pass Philpotts gained ground with a spectacular solo effort. University monopolißed the play in the closing stages, but was unable to add to its score, a splendidly contested game ending: University. 3; St. Luke's. 1. SOMERVILLE V. WESLEY. Somerville and Wesley ,played a spirited, game, in which the former gained an early advantage through clever concerted plajr by its vanguard. ,E. Watts used Mis pace to advantage and reached the Wesley . oircle. where Burton relieved with a hard hit. Somerville continued to have the better of matters and several fine attacks narrowly failed to produce results. Wesley rqade a good breakaway, Fitt and Slaney being o: nspicuous for clever play- Hunter relieved, and from his pass E. Watts took into the circle and scored with a fine shot. Somer ville came through again and after brilliant passing by the forwards, Seccombe goaled. Wesley Retaliated with a strong movement that terminated in a corner hit. Somerville cleared its circle and hard midfield play followed until half-time sounded, with the score: Somerville, 2- Wesley, 0. Shortly after resuming Somerville obtained a penalty corner, which was _ well cleared by Slaney. Wesley made a raid on the Somerville goal and Burton secured a clever goal. Playing with grest determination Somerville carried all before it in a brisk attack. C. Watts netted a fine goal from a corner hit, increasing Soraervilie's lead. From a further offensive E. Watts flicked the ball into jtbe net. Oldham and A. B. Burton led a "great Wesley attack, and exciting play followed in the Somerville circle. Bfsilwood snapped up-a chance and scored well, making the final scores; Somerville, 4; Wesley, 2. JUNIOR GRADE RESULTS. Third Grade Knock-Out.—Grammar, 8, beat Somerville, 2. LADIES* COMPETITIONS. The Auckland Ladies' Hockey Association continued its competition matches at Remuera last Saturday afternoon, under very unfavourable playing conditions.
