WEST END CLUB.

WORK OF THE PAST YEAR. The annual report of the- West End Rowing Club, to be submitted to the fortythird annual general meeting on Tuesday, September -20, states that, in the hope of establishing rowing in the universities, the committee admitted ten Training College students to membership at reduced rates. This was primarily responsible for establishing; the first university boat race, when Victoria College, Wellington, visited Auck land and defeated a crew from the Auckland University College. Next season a race between crews from the Auckland and Wellington Training Colleges is assured. _fhe committee recommends that the previous suggestion of rebuilding on a more suitable site, adjacent to the foreshore of Shelly Beach, should not be overlooked, in order to obtain the full benefits of the boat. harbour • now nearing completion a suitable racing course, and deep and sheltered water on all occasions. Ample provision could then be made for' housing eightoar boats, and every encouragement given to advance, eight-oar rowing, which is so prominent in other countries. The present membership of the club is 59 active, 26 honorary and 8 life members, as against 64. 24 and 7. respectively,- for the previous seaeon. The membership list was thoroughly revised during the season, and, as a result, only active participants were now included. The plant had been added to during the season and members of the club competed successfully at several regattas, among the •wins being the Barrett Cup and an invitation four-oar race at Whangarei. The season was completed with a credit balance of £54 7b Xld, although plant to the value of £57 lis 8d had been added.
