RADIO PROBLEMS.
THE POWER OF STATIONS. Many of the more important matters dealt with by the Australian Royal Com mission on VVifeless will also be debater) at the International Radio Conference to be held in Washington in October, especially the questions of wave-length and inter-station interference, states the Sydney Morning Herald. The consensus of opinion among radio engineers of standing is that to get satisfactory results from long-distance broadcasting there must be a considerable addition to the power that is now generally used at the Australian "A" class stations. In fact the first-class stations of the future will be those using a power of from 50 kilowatts to 100 kilowatts. There are several such stations already in operation, and the British Broadcasting Corporation has under consideration the erection of either four or five stations, each of which, it is stated, will have a power of 50 kilowatts.
There will be at least five such stations m Japan The stations at Tokio will use a powei % r arying from 50 to 100 kilowatts. Experiments are being made with,„,that station, and it has been found that "its transmissions have interfered to a considerable extent with loncr-distance reception of 2BL, Sydney, and 3LO, Melbourne. To avoid this interference the wave-lenghs of 2BL and 3LO have been temporarilv varied for experimental pur poses For the present 2BL is transmitting on 349 metres, and 3LO has been reduced by three or four metres. This action may be taken as an indication that within a reasonable time there will be a re-allocation of the wave-lengths of the majority of the broadcasting stations of Australia
