THE MARTON MEETING.

' TO-DAY'S EVENTS. The Marton Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. vvh ith opens to-day, finds a most »>nrtisfactor.v list, of acceptances for the various events which form the programme, and the fact of a number of Aucklandowned horses being engaged will' serve to centre much local interest in the racing. It was necessary to run the Trial Plate at. the Marton Spring Meeting last year in two divisions, but such will not be the case this year as the acceptors are not so numerous. There are 18 engaged in the event to-day, and, in the absence of recent form to guide, a surprise may be in store for backers. Aro de Val is reputed to he smart and may find good support, while the northern representatives, Mussie and Komak, showed sufficient speed last season to suggest possibilities. Mussie, who is a full-sister to Scat, finished a close third to Carinthia and Exalted in a juvenile event at Paeroa in her only start last season and that form may be worth noting. Because of the fact that they have some recent form to recommend them, the topweights, Peneus and Arataura, may be in demand for the First Hack Hurdles. When the pair met in the Moteo Hack Hurdles at Napier Park in June Arataura, in receipt of 201b, beat Peneus by 10 lengths, and only meets him 9n 2lb worse terms to-day, but against this it has to be re'membered that Peneus has come on in the meantime and notched a win and a second at Riccarton last month. Arataura may be preferred on a heavy track. There are some useful hacks engaged m the Spring Hack Handicap and among them are Boy and Grand National. This pair met in the Raukawa Hack Handicap fnine furlongs) at Hastings in June, end Boy, with 3lb the better of the weights, won by three lengths from Grand National, who has since notched a second at Riccarton. The pair seem likely to race prominentlv again to-day, and, as he is only meeting Grand _ National slb worse than when he beat him at Hastings, Boy may bo in most demand. Outside of the pair mentioned Closefire and Radiate ir.ay be also well supported. Winter form points to Nukumai end Alloway having excellent prospects in the Marton Handicap. On a heavy track—and that seems very probable—Nukumai may be preferred, even though he failed at Riccarton. To-day Nukumai will only meet Alloway on 4lb worse terms_ than when he beat him by four lengths in the Parliamentary Handicap, and, although the lighter scale may be in favour of Alloway, Nukumai's prospects should cerJ tainly be bright if he can repeat his Trehthsm form. The Hunt Cup Steeplechase has attracted a useful field of hunters and an interesting contest msy be expected. Banjuke and Maidos proved themselves in form by winning at New Plymouth last week and they will no doubt share favouritism. One of their most dangerous opponents may be Handy, who won a counle of minor huTdle events last season and also showed some promise over the big fences. Some smart_ hacks are engaged in the Electric Handicap and it should be a good betting race. Because of her decisive victory over Merry Mint—who has since won in Sydney—at, Trentham in July, Lady Limond will probably start a good favourite, as she is reported to have trained on nicely. The consistent, but unlucky. Kalos should also be in demand, while the elect of G. New's pair, Duke Abbey and Wanderlust, both Of whom have shown form in their latest engagements, will also have a following.

The Railway Handicap bears an open aspect, as the field includes a number of smart horses who have been off the scene for some months. It is quite likely that there_ may be a surprise and backers may find it hard to make a favourite. Degage may do best oi the ton-weight division on a heavy track, while Beaumont and Miss Hunana (who finished second to King Lu at Trentham) may also have the necessary condition to run erood races. A fair field will contest th? Tutaenui Hark Handicap and it should be a good betting rare. Boy, who claims an earlier engagement, may be fancied if reserved. Tn his absence Butterscotch, Te Kawana, nnd Anolo, who performed creditably in their latest engagements last season, may be among the popular fancies.

A third and two seconds is the record of Kalos in his three starts this season, and a victory for him would be well deserved. After his racing at Riccarton last month Knlos should not lack condition to tackle his coming engagements, and that should he a factor in his favour. It would occasion no_ surprise to find him among thp early winners. The manner in which Ladv Limond won the Trial Plate at Trentham in Julv stamped her as a promising filly and one likely to extend her record verv shortly. Lady Limond should be worth following in her coming engagements. NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. Matters were again slack at Ellerslie yesterday, nnd it is unlikely that there will be much of interest in the doings at headquarters until tho track conditions improve. as they are very sodden after heavy rains in the past few months. The early sprint; meetings here are only a few weeks off, and a spell of fine weather would be welcomed by trainers in order that they might be a'olf to give their charges some fast work. The majority of the local brigade are likely to be backward when they have to race .this month. The two-year-olds Justify (by Gay LadAssertive) and Attalad (by Gay Lad— Matata) are thriving on the useful tasks allotted them by T. George and are moulding into very solid youngsters. Like the majority of the local juveniles, they have not been seriously tried for speed owing to the adverse conditions ruling and it is too early yet to form any idea of their capabilities. Two youngsters at Ellerslie that are going along satisfactorily in their work without doing anything of note are Camp Prince |by Lucullus—Queen of the Earth) and Envoy (by Absurd—Bronze). Tho youngsters are_ the property of Mr. T. Impey and are trained by J. Buchanan, who also has several other juveniles in his charge. Caihp Prince and Envoy are shapely youngsters, nnd, when the conditions are_ suitable io enable them to do some sprinting, their work will be watched with interest. The hurdJar Karamu who has been indulging in mil work for some weeks, has rejoined the regular brigade and he is in capital order to be wound up for the spring meetings. Karamu has not achieved very much success, but he has scored on several occasions when the class was not good and may be equal to showing further form this season. Trainer G. Henderson lias received three additions to his team in the ■ shape of Viburnum, Royal, and Eh Timi. Viburnum is a five-year-old mare by Catmint from Douvardia that has never rafced, while Royal is a four-year-old mare by Marble Arch from Soult, Rose. Eh Timi has just completed a spell and he will probably bo pottered about for a few weeks boforo resuming work on the tracks. Festinn, Lento # took no harm from her successful effort in the Sylvia Park Handicap at tho Pakuranga Hunt meeting last month and is being kept going steadily with a viow to the spring meetings. In future Festina Lent© will have to do her racing in open company, as her latest success put her out of the hack class. The Day Comet maro Lady Faye, who scored a decisive victoy in the Hunters' Plat Handicap at New Plymouth last week, has gone into L. Knapp's stable at Awapuni. Lady Faye is freely engaged at the coming meetings and it will be interesting to see how she will shape in the back class. If reserved for the Hunters' Flat Handicap at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt meeting next week, she should have good proe&ecta of notching another victors.
