TRAMWAY SECTIONS.
PITT STREET ALTERATION. BUSINESS SOCIETY'S PROTEST. COUNCIL ADHERES TO PLAN. Considering that the new policy in regard to tramways fares and sections should be given a fair trial for six months from October 1, the City Council last evening refused to adopt a suggestion from the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society that the sections on the western circuit should be altered. The new policy, as affecting that route, makes St. Matthew's Church and the reservoir the end of the first and second sections respectively, the new faros being at the rate of one penny a section. The society suggested the first section should end at Pitt Street, as at present, and the second at Richmond Road. A petition from business interests in Karangahape and Great North Roads supported the sections defined in |jpfe new policy. "It is absolutely impracticable to work the scheme, making Pitt Street one section from town for a penny," said Mr. J. A. C Allum, chairman of the Tramways Committee. Mr. M. J. Bennett said he believed the business people concerned in making the representation for a revision of the sections were so earnest in the matter that they would sooner pay twopence as at present, and have the section end at Pitt Street. Mr. A. J. Entrican said the council would be well advised to give the new policy six months' trial, and not be influenced meanwhile by objections. "1 cannot understand the reasoning of the objectors," said Miss E. Melville. It seemed to her the business men near Pitt Street were afraid of the competition of businesses near the reservoir if the section were not mado to end at Pitt Street. Mr. G. Ashley objected to that interpretation of the motive. The council decided to adhere to its decision. Similar action was taken in regard to a further suggestion from the Business Promotion Society that Pitt Street should be made a lid section from the city, from the Three Lamps, and from the old section on the Grey Lynn route. MOUNT ALBERT REQUESTS. HOURS FOR WORKERS' TICKETS. Various suggestions affecting the now policy were received from the Mount Albert Borough Council, particularly regarding bus routes, and in these matters the tramways manager will confer with the Mount Albert. Council. The council will be informed that the hours for the use of workers' tickets cannot be-extended to 8.30 a.m., but the time limit of 8 a.m. will be adhered to.
