FIRE IN HOSPITAL.

prompt action by doctor. PATIENTS CARRIED OUTSIDE. HELPERS SUBDUE THE FLAMES. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] KAWAKAWA, Saturday. The Bay of Islands Hospital at Kawakawa narrowly escaped destruction by fire at six o'clock last evening. Members of the staff were having tee when they noticed a crackling noise at the partition between the dining room and the kitchen. An examination showed the building to be on 'fire. Townspeople were immediately advised by telephone and help arrived promptly. In the meantime Dr. Frengley had got a lead of water playing on the outbreak, but the pressure was not good. Another lead was taken from a plug in front of the building, and, with a better pressure, the fire was soon extinguished. The staff and townspeople quickly removed 25 patients into the open, and back into the building again when the fire was extinguished. The prompt action of Dr. Frengley and helpers saved the building from destruction. The damage is estimated at £SO.

The building is insured in the State Office.
