AUSTRALIAN MARATHON RACE QUEENSLAND RUNNER WINS. (Received August 28, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z SYDNEY. Aug. 28. In tlie Marathon race, tho result was as follows:—McMurdo, Queensland, 1; Iloydon, New South Wales, 2; Bateman, New South Wales, 3. Time, 3h 6m 20s. Of tho original 40 entrants 25 started. Bruton, the New Zealander, {lid not compete. For the first time the race carried with it tho Australian championship. The weather was fine and the course in good order. Gainsford and Hoydon, of New South Wales, were most prominent up to 10 miles, where Gainsford met with trouble to a leg and dropped out. Hoydon carried 011 with Bateman and McMurdo next. At 23 miles Hoydon had a lead of over five minutes and looked an easy winner, but he. tired and at 25 miles his lead had been reduced to under one minute. McMurdo, running strongly, won by 500 yards. The distance was 26 miles 385 yards. Hovdnn's time was 3h Pm 365. BOXING CONTEST IN SYDNEY, WILLIAMS WINS ON POINTS. (Received August 28, 5.25 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Aug. 28. At the Sydney Stadium, in a boxing contest last evening, Merv Williams defeated Phil King on points in a Cleveland well-contested bout. STRENUOUS WRESTLING MATCH. MEESKE AND WEBER DRAW. At the Melbourne Stadium, in a wrest ling match, Billy Meeske and Clarenco Weber drew, after <1 strenuous contest Moeske retains the heavy-weight championship. BREASTSTROKE SWIMMING. NEW RECORD FOR 100 METRES. (Received August 28, 5.25 p.m.) A. and N.Z. OSLO, Aug. 27. The swimmer Jacobsen established a world's record for the 100 metres breaststroke. His time was 1m 26 3-ss. FAST QUARTER-MILE SWIM. WEISMULLER SETS NEW RECORD. (Received August 27, 5.5 p.m.) Sun. HONOLULU, Aug. 26. In a swimming race of 440 yards Weismuller broke his own record for the distance. His time was 4m ; 50s. AMATEUR GOLF IN AMERICA. JONES WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. A. and N.Z. MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 27. The National amateur golf championship of America was won to-day by Bobby Jones. King George's yacht Britannia defeated Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock at Dartmouth Regatta. This was the third successive win of tho Britannia. ENGLISH COUNTY CRICKET. NOTTS HEADS LANCASHIRE. A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, Aug. 2G. There is an exciting race for the county cricket championship, as a result of to-day's play. Lancashire was previously uudefeated and headed the list with Notts second. Lancashire's heavy defeat combined with Notts win outright gives tho following percentages : —Notts, 69.23; Lancashire, 68.93. When Notts met Lancashire in the middle of August the crickoting public hoped for a decisive encounter,, and there was groat disappointment when rain saved Lancashire from certain defeat Most cricketers seem to sympathise with Notts, which, like Yorkshire, only plays men who wero born in the countv, whereas the Australian bowler Macdonald is a tower of strength to Lancashire. E Gilligan 103) Sussex won by an innings and 196 runs. For Worcestershire against Gloucester shire Root took 6 for 75. For Gloucestershire Parker too'- 7 for 38. Gloucester shire won.
