PAKURANGA HUNT MEETING WET DAY AT ELLERSLIE. PENDAVIES WINS HUNT CUP. MASTER DOON'S GAME FINISH. With rain falling at frequent intervals throughout Friday, the wind in an unfavourable quarter and a low barometer ruling it may be said that hopes were at zero for sunshine prevailing for the holding of tho Pakuranga Hunt Meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday. However, though it was always certain that racegoers would have to take their' outing on Saturday under conditions well in keeping with the winter season, the popularity of its gathering once again stood to the Pakuranga Hunt. There was a good attendance, the main grandstand being full to overflowing. Everything connected with the racing passed off pleasantly, and with the management of the gathering in the hands of Mr. W. S. Spence, nothing was left undone to ensure complete success. The tofalisator receipts amounted to £41.927 10b, against £51,393 10s, a decrease of £9471 compared with last year's figures. The opening event was the Greenmount Steeplechase, and in a field of five . Sea Comet was the one singled out for most attention. The contest was disappointing, only three completing the course. When Glenlight fell four fences from home. Sea Comet was left with a commanding advantage, and he looked all over a winner, but Nnkutere developed a good run, and the Waikato geldins, catching his rival in tho straight, romped home an easy winner. Nukutere's dam is Glenopal, who will be remembered as the winner of the Takapuna Cup of 1918. J. 'Mcßae, rider of Glenlight, escaped unhurt when his horse fell at the post and rail fence, and he remounted his horse and secured third place. Favourite Defeated. The Hunters' Hurdle Race attracted a field of eleven, Lady Acre, Just John and Mangani composed the favourite division. The first fence saw Ramblin' Kid go down, and Just John fell at the third obstacle. Lady Acre flattered the hopes of licr admirers at the back stretch, but she failed to maintain her run, and Fair Abbey, who was always discerned well up, worked his way into the lead at the head of the straight, and combating all challenges he drew away and scored an easy victory by three lengths from Mangani. The winner is a solid chestnut- gelding that may bo expected to see a better day The full field of 16 coloured on the card for the Sylvia Park Handicap went to the post, and when backers got to work they made Acushla favourite, with Festina Lento and Captain Cobham the pair most fancied of the others. The race was run at a solid pace, and when the concluding stage came to be undertaken, half a dozen were racing almost in line. Inside the distance Festina Lente came- along next the rails, and the daughter of Romeo, rebelling in the heavy going, won her race in game style by two lengths from Captain Cobham. When the numbers went up for the Jellicoe Handicap, it was found that of the 11 coloured on the card for the leading flat event, Delightment and Royal Present were the only withdrawals, which left a field of 10. Llandudno counted sufficient admirers to send him out favourite but Master Doon atid Te Kara also had good followings. At the end of a furlong Llandudno worked his way into the lead, and he was always found in the picture. Te Kara, who was well back, made a forward move sis furlongs from home, and the top weight was well up with the leaders when th-i head of the straight was reached. The distance saw Llandudno and Queen Arch fighting out a strenuous battle for supremacy, when Master Doon dashed up next the rails, and the son of Lucullus, finishing with market! sameness, under pressure, forged to the front 30 yards from the post, and won by a neck from Lady Arch. wh-. also finished veil, but Llandudno faded m. the concluding stage. To Kara had expended nis run at the half-distance, and he had to be content with fourth place.. Penda vies' Victory. A field of seven was produced to contest the Pakuranga Hunt Cup Fendavies and liypothesis were the- pair singled out for most attention, and the summing up in favour oi the two Waikato geldings came out quite accurately, as they iought out the battle for the leading position. The jumping in the first round was ot a cajiital order, and the whole of the contestants were all standing up when the back stretch was reached in the second round. Rafferty was ; the first one to go out of the contest, a I faulty jump at the hurdle at the six furlong post sending his rider out of the saddle. Sea Comet rattled up with a smart run at this stage, and as he headed Pendavies, who had been making the pace, his prospects looked quite bright. However, Pendavies disposed of his Ellerslie rival at the post and rail fence, and he ran home an eacy winner. Hypothesis and Sea Comet, who were both tiring perceptibly, bored over to the judge's box, and Hypothesis gained second position by a neck from hiß rival. The cup which formed the trophy was presented by the master of the hunt. Mr. 11. Bullock-Webster, to the wner, Mr. T. Wilson, and the Waikato sportsman was warmly congratulated or the success of his colours. An inquiry was held by the stewards after the race into an incident close to the finish of the contest, between Hypothesis and Sea Comet. T. Chaplin, the rider of the latter, was considered to have ridden carelessly, and he was suspended for a month. The Auckland Handicap attracted the good field of 17. . War Officer was made favourite, with Captain Cobham the one most fancied of the others. Takarunga and Rarakau, who filled the roles of pacemakers, were still in the. van at the head of the straight, but Rarakau had shot his bolt a little further on. War Officer came along with a resolute challenge in the closing stasre, but Takarunga always had the best of it. and the latter beat the favourite by three-parts of a length. Takarunga is a half-brother to Festina Lente, wh > won the Sylvia Park Handicap earlier in the day, both horses being out of the Soult mare Lady Floss. There was a field of 10 for- the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap, for which Odin and Pukerimu were the popular fancies. As tho first furlong was completed. Edifice fell, hut fortunately without serious effects, though the rider. Mr. J. H. Caughley. had a very narrow escape. Quinvardia came along with a good run at the head of the straight, and taking command at the distance, he won his race easily at the end by a couple of lengths from Pukerimu. After the race.. Mr. J. Patten, rider of Levenside, complained that Mr. H. Dodds, rider of Quinvardia had caused interference to him. After an inquiry, the stewards dismissed the complaint. The concluding event of the programme was the Punedin Handicap, and m a field of 11 snddled up to contest the six furlong race. Town Guard was the one selected for the position of favourite, Delinhtment being the one most fancied of the others. Fi'iel'i, who, as usual, was ouicklv into her stride, shot right away and with n lead of hnlf a dozen lengths she lookod like coming in 1 >v herself. Two furlongs from home her advantage hod been wiped out. and shr'was well beaten below the distance. Delightment got a clear run on the rails, and. the poii of Catmint, striding along .attractively in the heavy going, won his race in rniitc dashing style by four lencths from King Lu. who also finished up his task m good style. Glenlight toppled over ot the first fence on the hill, leaving Sea Comet out about ten lengths from Nukutere. CANTERBURY JOTTINGS. HORSES FOR DUNEDIN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Paladin—Persian Lilac colt, Satrap, who is being got ready for the Dunedin Guineas, is training on well and he promises to be a force in tliree-yea.r-old races. His form in the Dunedin Guineas should provide a line. His stable mate Count Cavour won this race as a preliminary to his Derby successes. F. Christmas has the three-year-old Martarma doing plenty of strong tasks and the big Martian colt is doing well in his preparation. It is probable that the Dunedin Guineas will bo his first three-year-old engagement. Footfall is going along smoothly in his preparation for spring engagements. He looks an improved horse, and he should play a leading part in important events over a distance tins season. His oarly programme has not been settled definitely, but it is certain that G. Murray Aynsley will wish to give him racing before he has to tackle the New Zealand Cup. Centrepiece has gone on well lately in his preparation for spring engagements. He has been in steady work through the winter and has reached the stage when he will soon be hitting out in more serious tasks. He will mako his . first appearance for the season at Trentham, and after that he should be in good order for the Riccarton carnival ill November. He claims a New Zealand Cup engagement, but bo far as his public form is a fjuide he may find a twomile journey a trifle too far for him. The Southland two-year-old Silver Paper (by Paper Money from Silver Peak) has been at Riccarton for a few weeks, and he will remain there to complete his preparation for the McLean Stakes at the Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting in October. He is a well-grown and quality-looking youngster, who shapes like making a useful galloper. A couple of two-year-olds in T. H. Gillett's stable, the brother to Count Cavour and the filly by Solferino from Dame Straitlace. are jogging along Quietly. They will not bo racing until late in the se«aßon, so there is no need to hurry them.
