POLLARD CUP MATCHES. SECOND SERIES PLAYED. MANUKAU DEFEATS GRAFTON. The second series of matches in the Auckland Rugby Union's Pollard Cup competition were played on Saturday, Manukau, which beat Grammar Old Boys the previous Saturday, defeated Grafton at Onehunga by three points. Following are the results : University, 11, v. City, 3. Manukau, 6, v. Grafton, 3. Marist, 3, v. Otahuhu, 3. The match between Technical Old Boys and Suburbs was not played, as Suburbs was unable to field a team. UNIVERSITY BEATS CITY. City and University met on a muddy ground at the Show Grounds. After a spell of scrambling in midfield Bradanovitch made an opening for McLeod, who was well tacklsd. 'itien Jacob, the City fullback, battled through the ruck to score the first try. Barnes failed to convert. Marks attempted to intercept and missed and McLeod went over. Blakey converted, the spell ending: University. 5; City, 3. . University staged a pnssing rush after the change-over, but tile City defence was sound. Olsen broke through and passed to Stone, but Jacob tackled him well. The heavy ground at Onehunga made conditions against good football, and the Manukau-Grafton match developed into a forward struggle. - The Grafton score was from a penalty, while Taylor and N. Lipscombo scored unconverted tries for Manukau. A DRAWN GAME. Marist could field only ten men against Otahuhu. at Otahuhu. but succeeded in holding the home team in check. The gam© was uninteresting, ihumes defeated Paeroa by 9 points to 5. Shortly after the kick-off Thames secured from a scrum and, from a pass, a xmssing bout ensued for Paeroa. which resulted in a force. Thames then went to tne attack and Dufty secured a mark in a handy position. He missed the kick, tor about ten minutes Thames continued to attack and Dean, missing tile ball, allowed '1 names to get over, Benny scoring. The kick failed. Paeroa returned to the attack and ihames was penalised in its own 25. bwann had a shot at goal but missed. The Paeroa forwards, headed by I olancl and D. For the second time this season Hamilton to-day successfully defended a challenge for the Peace Cup. their opponents being Cam-brid-e The home team won by 11 points to Sr The match took place at Rugby Park before a large gathering of spectatois. An unfortunate feature of the game v.-aa the shocking condition of the ground, which freauently made the ball unplayable. A willing game was witnessed, the teams being fairly evenly matched. Cambridge put up a solid defence, but the Hamilton backs proved too good for them. Ihe game was delayed for 20 minutes on account of acciBuyiy opened a Hamilton attack at the commencement. The challenge match between the Matamata and Waipa senior representative teams for the right to challenge for the Peace Cup was played here today in fine weather and in the presence of a large crowd Within a few minutes of the kick-off the Matamata pack attacked and Fausett kicked a penalty goal. The score was equalised a few minutes later by Kay kicking a splendid goal from nearly halfway. The Waipa forwards were having tho better of the game by making it open. Shepherd kicked past the Matamata fullback and Nesdale raced up the line to touch down. Kay added the extra points. There was no further score until ten minutes before time, when the ball came out from a line-out and Brown, unmarked, raced round and scored a try for Matamata. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DARGAVILLE, Sunday. In a match for the Harding Shield yesterday Northern Wairoa (holders) defeated Bay of Islands by 3 points to 0. The score resulted from a penalty goal scored by Watson. Tho game whs very uninteresting, and was much in favour of the holders, who. however, were unable to cross their opponents; line. _ In the junior game for the Harding Oup. Ruawai, 8 points, defeated Dargaville (holders), 3, after a good game. Ruawai have now won both the union trophies for the season.
