MOTOR TAXATION.

Sir, —Mr. Coates has just stated that motor taxation is only £3 per year, while road upkeep is £6 per motor per year; and, as damage to roads by other than motor vehicles is negligible, why not make motor taxation carry more of the burden and assess this charge on the unladen weight of the vehicle. Motor-cars are each year being made more capable of high speed, and to_watch the continual grading operations that are necessary on some of our main highways gives one an idea of the ceaseless work necessary to keep the roads in order. In fact, so fast do the larger and more powerful cars travel that the metal chips are swep£ off the road by the force of the . air currents created. I am a farmer paying rates amounting to about £1 per week and make less use of the roads than some of the pleasure vehicles which pay a toll of about Is 3d per week. I also pay' as well Is 3d on my own car. W.H.'
