THE RHODES SCHOLARS.

The opinion sometimes expressed elsewhere that Rhodes scholars are a failure is shared by many in this country. The only American Rhodes scholar who has become a national figure is President Aydelotte, of Swarthmore, whereas, according to the dream of the late Cecil Rhodes, ex-Rhodes scholars should now be "running the country." Professor Beaty, of the Southern Metho dist University, travelling fellow under the Albert Kahn Foundation, says that many Rhodes scholars, on their return to America, ' reflect, in an exaggerated way, English mannerisms that are not typical of the best Englishmen, and con sequently make many Americans look with some distrust on their foreign education." It is given by Professor Beaty as his own opinion that the Rhodes scholars of any given year would compare favour ably with members of any other group of American men of similar age. He pointed out that the insistence on a knowledge of Greek narrowed the possible aspirants, even in a State like Virginia, to a mere handful; that the total number of Rhodes scholars in proportion to the tons of thousands of college students in any given year, is very small. Many experts are considering suggestions for the revision of the method of choosing Rhodes scholars, to avoid the present necessity of giving two scholarships alike to a State with 10,000,000 persons and to a State with fewer than 100,000 peoplo.
