OBITUARY.

MR. GEORGE SMITH. ROYAL COURT OFFICIAL. A. and N.Z. ' LONDON. Aug. 18. The death has occurred of Mr. George Smith, who for 33 years was closely associated with the Court. Mr. Smith died as the result of a motor accident. His age was 64. Every newspaper announcement from Buckingham Palace came to the Press Association, in London through Mr. Smith and was then distributed to the newspapers throughout Britain. Mr Smith's unique journalistic position gave him an intimate knowledge of Royalty. King George and Queen Mary were much attached to this working newspaper man, who was entrusted with the record of their public engagements. The late King Edward was specially fond of him. On one occasion Mr. Smith quietly slipped a sovereign into King Edward's hand when he wanted to buy a buttonhole from a lady who was selling flowers for charity but suddenly I discovered that he had no money.
