THE AUTOMATIC SYSTEM. NEW CONNECTING EXCHANGE. (Received August 19. 8.25 p.m.) Snn LONDON, Aug. IS. As an extension of the automatic tele phone system in Holborn, a new exchange has been opened. It is called a ' tandem." This exchange has no subscribers. It is merely a junction which' directly connects distant exchanges which otherwise could only be linked up by several intermediate connections.
