NEW WIRELESS BEACONS. INSTALLATION IN BRITAIN. (Br: i, r Official Wireless.) (Received August 19, 6.30 p.m.) A. and N.Z. RUGBY, Aug. 18. Wireless beacons foi assistance in navigation are now under construction. They will be placed at various points around the English coast. The purpose of the beacons is to send out distinctive wireless signals at regular intervals to enable the officers of vessels fitted with wireless direction-fin-ders to take their bearings and accurately determine their positions. These installations will form a valuable addition to the aids to navigation for ensuring the safety of life at sea. They are expected to prove of the greatest assistance when ships are approaching the land, particularly in darkness and in foggy weather. APPARATUS DESCRIBED. master-clock control. (Received August 19, 8.25 p.m.) gun LONDON, Aug. 18. The first of the new wireless beacons has been installed in the Scilly Islands. It automatically sends out a special call sjgn to enable ships to take their bearings. The apparatus is controlled by a masterclock with a starting up and a switching off device. Its range is from 70 to 100 miles.
