A grave situation has again arisen at Nanking owing to the rapid advance of the Northern Chinese army. A naval wireless message indicates that all Europeans have been ordered to stand ready for evacuation to British warships. It is reported that an ultimatum has been received from the Northerners demanding the immediate surrender of Nanking, otherwise the city will be shelled. Later advices state that shelling has commenced. A British warship, the Wivern, was hit several times. There were no casualties. The situation is most tense.
