CONDITIONS IN WELLINGTON. PETONE AREA FLOODED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Friday. A heavy, drenching rain and a cold wind prevailed here this morning. Rain commenced to fall at 2 a.m., and at nine o'clock the gauge measured .44in. Rain continued throughout the morning. The whole of the north-eastern portion of Petohe, that is the area all round the new Ava Street railway station and the new subdivisions, is under water owing to the now hill drainage scheme having interfered with the storm water outfall drain. The heavy rain has seriously interfered with the working of cargo on the waterfront. The storm lias not interrupted the shipping services, although the Alexander, a coastal vessel, is reported to be sheltering in Picton. The intercolonial steamer Maheno sailed from Wellington at 12.33 p.m. to-day for Sydney. There was a coutinuation of boisterous weather in Aucklaud yesterday, the wind blowing freshly from the south-west, accompanied by frequent heavy rain showers. In the evening the conditions improved, the wind dying away to a light breeze. The barometer at mid-day yesterday had fallen to 29.35 in. It rose in the afternoon, but steadied last evening at 29.50 in.
