THE HOUSEWIFE'S BEAUTY.

A great drawback to housework from the housewife's point of view is its roughening effect on the hands and the havoc played !>y dust and dirt on the hair and complexion. The actual exercise, however, is beneficial. The figuro is developed and the muscles healthily exercised during such domestic tasks as washing, bedmakirig and sweeping. The prudent housewife takes a few simple precautions. For instance, a large overall that completely envelops and protects the dress is essential. The woman who values the beauty and lustre of her "crowning glory" should wear a neat dusting cap. A good plan is to brush the hair well with an invigorating tonic every day. The Complexion.—lt is important to protect the face from dust. The best plan is to smear a little cold cream over the face and neck and wipe off with a soft handkerchief. Give a final dusting with oatmeal or any good face powder. This ensures full protection from dust. When the housework is over for the day, wash the face in warm, soft water and the face will be beautifully soft and fresh. The Hands. —It is, however, the hands that suffer most on account of housework. The nails should be cut and filed fairly short. A little good cold cream should be rubbed freely into the hands, or pure olive oil answers the same purpose. One of the best softening lotions for the hands is made by mixing equal parts of glycerine and rose water and adding four or five drops of tincture of benzoin. The Feet. —If the feet get very tired and acfung, bathe them in warm water, to which equal parts, a teaspoonful each, of alum, borax and sea salt have been added.
